$200,000 gift to Rotary Foundation:
Peat challenges club to reach $1 million mark

Members of the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne offered a rousing standing ovation for an anonymous gift of $200,000 from a club member to the Rotary International Foundation.

Jeff Peat, Foundation committee chair, noted the club’s cumulative contributions to the Foundation stand at  $997,810 – or $2,190 short of the million-dollar mark.

“I challenge the club to donate at least another $2,190 this year so we reach the million mark, especially with one of our members (Lisa Waterman) serving as District Governor,” Jeff said. “Let’s reach a million this year!”

Young leaders: ‘Take ownership of your community’
Three pillars guide the activities of Young Leaders of Northeast Indiana (YNLI), explained Patrick Florea, director at large of the YNLI executive committee. The pillars are: Community, Social and Leadership-based activities and goals.

Florea and YNLI President Ryan Krueckeberg addressed the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne during its March 12 meeting at Parkview Field.

YNLI began in 2004 when the Northeast Indiana Corporate Council wanted to create an organization of younger communities to “stop the brain drain” and entice younger adults to remain and thrive in the community, explained Krueckeberg. “They wanted to create a voice for the young adults and obtain direct input from this demographic, with a  big focus on quality of life.”

Today, with 245 dues-paying members, YNLI boasts a social network of more than 3,000, has become a powerful voice for young leaders and offers numerous successful programs. Below is a summary of YNLI’s efforts under its three guiding pillars of Community, Social and Leadership.

Community: Own it
  • YLNI Farmers Market: On a strictly volunteer basis, YNLI members revived this storied, historic market 13 years ago at the corner of Wayne and Berry streets. Today, more than 2,000 people visit the seasonal market each Saturday. This market will close after 2018 as it is merging with Fort Wayne Farmers Market and will reopen as a year-around market at the new Electric Works campus.
  • Voter Advocacy: YNLI hosts a Meet the Candidates Night and sponsors a Candidate’s Boot Camp for novice political candidate.
  • General advocacy: YNLI has become a community advocate, with successes including endorsing the local income tax, funding The Landing project and supporting Electric Works at the former General Electric campus. “Mayor (Tom) Henry credited YNLI for the success of the Harrison Project,” Krueckeberg said, adding, “at first we had to shove our opinions in people’s faces, and now they’re coming to us and asking for our opinion!”

Professional development: Tools, mentors and more
  • YNLI Leadership Institute: YNLI offers training for young emerging leaders. Around 40 people attend each session; Institute alumni will reach 400 this year.
  • View from the Top: A panel of local leaders discusses leadership and related issues with young adults.
  • Power Lunches: Local leaders meet with YNLI members in a mentoring role.

Social: Bringing young adults together
  • Hot Spots: These are regular networking, social events for area young adults.
  • Fort Wayne Concert Series: YNLI was among the first groups to bring concerts downtown. “We believe we paved the path for other groups to perform downtown,” said Florea.
  • And more: The group has sponsored other events such as the Masquerade Ball, Living Fort Wayne Film Series and other networking events. “If you’re going to love where you work and live, you have to get connected,” Florea added.  He estimates YNLI’s social network at 3,000.

YNLI began the YNLI Foundation several years ago, Florea said. Its mission is to attract, develop and retain emerging leaders by providing funds that promote leadership through personal and professional and community involvement.

“When I started at Lincoln (Financial Group) 10 years ago, I hadn’t expected to stay in Fort Wayne,” Krueckeberg recalled. “But Nancy Jordan, head of Fort Wayne operations, encouraged me to take the YNLI Leadership Institute, and I got involved in YNLI. Since then I’ve served on several boards and love living here. You have to take ownership in your community.”

YNLI’s next challenge is to develop leadership programs for high school and college-age students in Northeast Indiana. “We want to help these young individuals connect with their community, explore the cools things that are happening here and sway their decision to stay,” Florea said.

Big thoughts about the ‘Feast”
Rotary Big Easy Feast Chair Jeff Krull led a brief members’ forum about the club’s annual fundraiser. He said this year’s Feast, held Feb. 13 at the Lincoln Financial Event Center at Parkview Field on Mardi Gras, netted approximately $12,000, thanks to about 550 patrons and event sponsors. Proceeds benefit the club’s Riverfront Project, the Water Jet Fountains.

For about 10 minutes, meeting attendees discussed various aspects of the Feast, from its effectiveness to selling tickets to volunteering for the 2019 Feast. Results of the Feast Forum will be shared soon!

There is a unique volunteer opportunity available with the upcoming Rotary Young Leaders Academy to be held in April. There are two slots available – contact President Tim with your questions and interest. He is not asking for a commitment, he is simply asking for your ear so he can explain what is involved so interested people have a good understanding as they make a decision. This is a very worthwhile event and a great opportunity to invest in young leaders in our community.

A group of seven Argentinians will be visiting our district in early June. Dawn Harvey of the District Friendship Committee is looking for somebody from our club to head up an effort to coordinate with the other Fort Wayne clubs to put together a schedule of activities for their upcoming visit, which will include all Fort Wayne clubs. Contact President Tim with your questions/interest.
