Co-presenters evoke the wit and wisdom of Abraham Lincoln
When a political rival derided Abraham Lincoln for being two-faced, he deflected the criticism with typical self-deprecating humor, saying, “If I had two faces, would I be wearing this one?” And when a supplicant came to him begging for a job saying, “The postal inspector has died. Can I take his place?” Lincoln replied, “It is OK with me, if it is OK with the undertaker.”Monday’s Rotary program on “Abraham Lincoln: Master of Language,” was peppered with such quotes read by Judge Bill Lee in his resonant voice, and co-presenter Sara Gabbard read from a script based on her college dissertation.
The duet painted a verbal portrait of why this complex and “most unlikely figure” became one of the “most revered of all human beings.” Gabbard described our 16th president as perhaps the best example of a self-educated person the world has ever known because he read so deeply and so widely, from the Bible to Euclid to Robert Burns’ poetry. Judge Lee read some of Lincoln’s own melancholy poetry from “My Childhood Home I See Again,” containing reflections on his hardscrabble upbringing in Indiana.
They talked of Lincoln’s devotion to the founding documents of our nation and reverence for its founding fathers. He lamented, ironically, in his early political career that his generation lacked the great challenge of the revolution and establishment of a nation. They shared Lincoln’s innermost thoughts on Christianity revealed in “Meditations on the Divine Will” that he penned in 1862 during the depths of the Civil War. How could two combatants, each believing that God was on their side, both be right, Lincoln wondered in that document, which was discovered after his death.
Gabbard proposed that Lincoln’s second inaugural address is the greatest ever given by a U.S. president and that its message resonates to this day: “With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds”…and do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”

A tutoring/mentoring program that matches adults to work one-on-one with
kindergarten - 5th grade students.
Study Connection meets on Tuesdays from 2:55-3:55 pm. - September thru May
If you can't make a weekly commitment, consider partnering up and tutoring every other week.
Volunteers play a BIG role in the students lives - by helping them with homework, reading, most
importantly just by being a mentor, and opening the students eyes to to all that they can achieve.
