FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF FORT WAYNE MEETING OF NOVEMBER 14, 2016, EDITED BY SCOTT WILSON:

Off to a Patriotic Start

With the elections FINALLY in the rearview mirror, unity and patriotism were the themes of the day at the November 14 meeting. Song Leader Bruce Haines led off with a well-timed song selection, “God Bless America.” David Nicole added to the mood in his sergeant’s program, citing Lee Greenwood’s “Proud to Be an American” as he listed a number of things we can all be proud of as Americans.

World Affairs Conference a BIG Success

John Hoffman reported that the World Affairs Conference went exceptionally well last week.Thirty Rotarians volunteered to help (26 from the Fort Wayne Downtown Club).  And 200 students from 15 area high schools participated. In addition to exciting programming, the group enjoyed pizza (84 to count!) and other goodies. A special thanks went out to Allen County Public Library … and an extra-special thanks to John for doing a great job with this again.

New Rotarian Introduced

Scott Wilson introduced his friend and colleague Tracy Davis as the newest addition to Rotary. She is Director of Community Outreach for the Ivy Tech Community College in the Greater Fort Wayne area. Tracy is an IU graduate (and an IPFW MBA) and has been working with non-profit organizations for 18 years. She’s excited to join Rotary and will most certainly bring lots to our Service Above Self mission. Tracy lives in Fort Wayne with her husband and middle school-aged son. Welcome, Tracy!

Riverfront Development Project to Go to a Vote

John Hoffman reported that members will be receiving a Survey Monkey communication with an opportunity for members to vote on a favored option for the Riverfront Development Project. The options are a Children’s Recreation Area or a Water Jet Fountain … or none of the above.

Your input is critical toward directing the club as to which avenue is the best fit for our organization. Paper ballots will also be available at the next club meeting. The Rotary 2nd Century Planning Committee will be reviewing the surveys in December for a final recommendation.

Crosswinds Featured in Program

Crista Miller introduced this week’s program speaker, Colleen Terrell from Crosswinds, and shared how this organization touched her life.
Colleen presented how Crosswinds provides faith-based counseling, life coaching and support for a wide variety of situations, including emotional/mental health issues, suffering marriages, troubled teenagers, trauma and grief, and a number of other critical services. Families seeking help can visit Crosswinds at its Illinois Road facility or staff can come to homes for a more private, confidential consultation.

In addition to these support services, the group also maintains a camp in the Dominican Republic, providing a mission work experience. Crosswinds also offers Employee Assistance Programs for area employers and crisis counseling.

Thank you for sharing awareness of this valuable family resource.

STUDY CONNECTION TUTORS NEEDED!
HELP SPREAD THE WORD.

There is a great need for additional tutors at Washington Elementary.

The school currently has  four students who would benefit greatly from the program but we don’t have any tutors to assign to them.

It’s only an hour a week and you can double-up with another tutor to share that responsibility so you only tutor every other week.

If you can’t tutor, maybe you know of a friend, co-worker or neighbor who would be willing to give one hour a week – or every other week – to tutor a student.

THANK YOU all for being a positive role model and helping these students In achieving academic success.
