Glorious Gate Rowing
Lynn Gilmore introduced our speaker, John Hoham, executive director and founder of Glorious Gate Rowing. John explained that a Rowing Center is needed in this area. There are 23 miles of rivers that can accommodate rowers. Rowing for those with disabilities is being planned. John has organized Glorious Gate – Rowing Association. Rowing is an adventure and good physical activity. Rowing is available on the Chicago River, Toledo, and Indianapolis. There is a portage for canoes in Fort Wayne.
Interested group of rowers include Middle School Rowing Camp, IUPUI, University of Michigan, with Purdue Fort Wayne being active soon. Purdue Fort Wayne Campus will be invited to be the location of the local Rowing Center. St. Francis University, IVY Tech, and Purdue Fort Wayne may all have teams for the Rowing competition.
Dan Wire, Friends of the Riverfront, spoke affirming using Fort Wayne Rivers for rowing. This area is less affected by weather conditions; i.e., Chicago River having swells of water when they have heavy winds. The Riverfront can pair easily with Turnstone. Turnstone is preparing for Paralympics 2024. The cost of living in Fort Wayne for training is lower than other rowing training cities. This is another reason for drawing people to our Rowing Center Gateway!
A brochure was available at our tables and a video was shown to begin the program on Glorious Gate Rowing Association. Click Here for more information.
Tim Gibson received his Level 4 pin from the Rotary International Foundation. Tim has included Rotary Foundation in his will. This award was presented to Tim by District Governor Al Brothers.
It's Almost Big Easy Time!
Take it from Lynne Gilmore and Barb Wachtman (behind those masks) - The Big Easy Feast, our biggest fundraiser, is a great opportunity for community outreach! We hold it on Fat Tuesday, which is coming up on Feb. 25. This year we’ll be supporting the Fort Wayne Dance Collective and Heartland Sings. We’ll also have scholarships for the New Tech High School Interact Club. Dance Collective will perform.
Along with the traditional Mardis Gras cuisine and live music, we’ll add a bourbon tasting. Sell your six tickets NOW and consider being a sponsor (for $100 and up)!
