Rotaract: Young leaders present strong programs

In providing an update of the Rotaract Club of Fort Wayne, Rotaract leaders affirmed the future of Rotary and the quality of young adults in our midst. In short, ladies and gentlemen, we are in great hands.

For example, Rotaract Club President Lizzie Gordon, a financial research analyst at Ash Brokerage, explained the club had three overarching goals for this year: grow and stabilize membership, create standing committees and develop and maintain annual events. Guess what? All three goals have been met, as the Rotaract Club now has 25 members (and growing), has established committees and successfully hosted an annual Friendsgiving Dinner as well as other annual events.

Leaders of the Rotaract Club presented the program at the April 3 meeting of Rotary Club of Fort Wayne at Parkview Field.

Sponsored by the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne, Rotaract is for persons between the age of 18 and 30. Lisa Waterman, chair of the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne’s Rotaract Committee, explained the Rotaract Club of Fort Wayne began during her tenure as club president in 2008. Several years later, declining membership required a re-focus. In 2014, Waterman worked with past Rotaractors and current Rotarians Allie Braun and Jeremy Redding to refocus and reinvigorate the Rotaract Club. Dr. Eric Shoemaker, 2014 Rotaract president, re-launched the club on a fresh path of service and fun.

Waterman emphasized the only way Rotaract remains viable is through continued support from the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne through membership referrals, an active Rotaract Committee and a fresh supply of great speakers leading to successful service projects. That is, partnering with Rotaract to ensure its long-term viability.

Gordon explained the Rotaract Club meets twice a month. The formal meeting, at 6:30 pm on the first Wednesday of the month, is currently held at the Allen County Pubic Library. The club’s second informal meeting date varies according to social event. Gordon said the club often seeks meeting speakers who can discuss areas of service in the community and who can suggest a service project to involve the young leaders.

Service committee chair Rachel Batdorff, public relations and marketing specialist at the Bowen Center, said past projects have included painting a house and other projects for Neighborhood Link, cleaning refugee classrooms at Catholic Charities, assisting in meat packing for Hands Packing Hope, mentoring Harrison College students and participating in the Big Goal Collaboration of the Northeast Indiana Regional Partnership.

But don’t worry that these young adults are all work and no play … The Rotaractors know how to have fun. Club secretary and head of social events, Colin Aumiller, a kindergarten teacher at Southwick School, explained the club recently staged a downtown scavenger hunt that had members climbing trees and roving downtown for clues and treasures. They’ve also had an ugly sweater contest, cheered on the Mad Ants, helped brew beer, escaped from an Escape Room and more.

Waterman and Gordon said the transient nature of young professionals means the club is always looking for new members. Please send potential members’ names to Waterman at lisarotarybiz@live.com or to the club at, RotaractFortWayne@gmail.com, and they’ll make the follow-up contact. Additionally, the club is eager to learn of possible speakers, especially when the topic could involve a service project. Once again, contact Waterman or email the club.

An anonymous, non-Rotarian, donor honored the Rev. Dr. James Cress with a Paul Harris Fellow. Club Foundation Chair Randy Rider said the donor sought to honor Cress for his abiding and tireless years in ministry, his efforts throughout the community and his service to his country. Cress also is indispensable to our club as webmaster, photographer and audiovisual guru. This marks Cress’ fourth Paul Harris Fellow. Individuals are named a Paul Harris Fellow for each $1,000 donation to the Rotary Foundation. The award bears the name of the founder of Rotary.
