John Gliot shared the 12 principals known as the Scout Law as personal behaviors that could be “a great step
forward in guiding everything Rotarians do in our community.” They include:
Be Trustworthy. Tell the truth and keep promises.

“Rotary Is...” – by Roger ReeceRoger Reece shared an event that changed his life even before he was born. His mother was stricken with polio as a child while she was playing in a farmyard with neighbors. She was paralyzed from the waist down and never walked again without the aid of braces and crutches. “What struck me was her willingness to press on in difficult times,” he said. She worked at the Children’s Home for 45 years. He recalled strapping her onto his motorcycle when he was a teenager and taking her for a ride, an event she remembered as one of the most fun of her life. Roger said her example made a multigenerational impact on his family.
He noted that Rotary International’s campaign to eradicate polio from the face of the earth will take a multigenerational approach. Younger generations of Rotarians have never seen a person with polio because the campaign was so effective in the U.S. He noted that the virus is active in just two remaining countries, Pakistan and Afghanistan, and urged Rotarians to donate to the Polio Plus campaign.
Rotary International is a partner in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative alongside the World Health Organization (WHO), the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Its goal is to eradicate polio worldwide.
New Member Introduction - Mike DahmBill Harris introduced Mike Dahm, a Real Estate Broker/Advisor, Commercial Real Estate, as the newest member of the Rotary Club of Fort Wayne. Mike is a former member of the Anthony Wayne Rotary Club; when his office moved downtown, Mike decided to join the Fort Wayne Rotary Club.
Mike and his wife DeeDee have three children and four grandchildren. One of those grandkids is maintaining a family tradition, marking the tenth “Dahm” to attend Xavier University–Mike’s alma mater.
Mike is motivated to serve others through the Rotary Four-Way Test and simply seeing how he can help others. Sports marks his favorite pastimes, from playing tennis and golf to watching college basketball and football.

COVID-19 crisis accelerates United Way’s
transformation as responsive convener
Soon after Matthew Purkey moved to Fort Wayne in February as the new president and CEO of United Way of Allen County, the pandemic threw vulnerable populations and the nonprofits who serve them into chaos. Purkey was able to draw on his Marine training to be the first to respond in times of crisis and his United Way Worldwide leadership training to create and lead a rapid response team. His team was able to accomplish something that had never been done before. They convened all the major funders in the community to support the work of an emergency relief advisory board. United Way’s role is that of “dot connector,” he said. “We ask two questions: What is the community’s most pressing need? What can we do about it?”
What they did was raise $3.4 million for an Emergency Relief Fund. “We regard money as the fuel to engage the engine to measurably improve the lives of people in our community,” he said.
That fund enabled 35 agencies to create a quarantine center for the homeless used by 454 people, address the spiking suicide rate in the African American community, provide financial assistance to struggling households, and deliver over 600,000 meals to date. Three organizations—Brightpoint, Lutheran Social Services, and Catholic Charities--led the housing assistance program during a “tsunami of evictions,” Purkey said. They are bracing for the next wave as eviction projections expire.
Purkey provided the following data from 211 calls to demonstrate the surge in community needs:

Purkey said he knew nothing about United Way until his Marine unit was assigned to perform humanitarian assistance in Haiti after an earthquake. The marines were ill-trained for this duty, but he noticed a swarm of volunteers who seemed to know what they were doing. They were wearing “Live United” t-shirts.
“After that, I was hooked on United Way,” he said. He returned to Dayton as a civilian and volunteered for everything United Way had to offer. They hired him as manager of resource development, and his career path began.
Presidential Cabinet Award (and Paul Harris Award presentation) - Lori StinsonLori Stinson was recognized by President Jeff Peat for her active involvement in a number of projects, including the Golf Outing, and was therefore invited to participate in the opening of the "Presidential Cabinet". As part of this recognition, Lori was awarded with a Paul Harris award. Thank you, Lori, for your consistent Service above Self!

The annual Foundation Gala will be a virtual event this year due to the pandemic. President Jeff stated the Club is evaluating having a "viewing event" at Parkview Field for Club members. More information to come in the near future...
