Our Program for October 27th

District Governor, Wulff Reinhold

Youth Awareness Training

Youth Awareness Training is a mandate from Rotary International for all clubs who have Youth Service related programs such as Interact.

Wulff will discuss precautions for our membership such as one on one contact with youth, how to respond to allegations of abuse or inappropriate behavior and finally, how the allegations are reported and investigated.

Meeting Highlights

Meeting Highlights

Now that your attention in piqued, here's the scoop!

Straight, er directly, from the Studio Theater of Santa Rosa's 6th Street Playhouse, the cast of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" mugged for Warren at our Club's benefit show Wednesday last.  For the first time, many Boomers broke their naivety bubble and saw and heard this 1970's cult classic for the very first time.

Arranged by Sunrise Playhouse Supporter Jack Strange and beautifully hosted by members Jennifer Adams, Deb Frances, Carmen Gutierrez and Steve Herron, the night before our meeting was one to remember and savor.
Yes, that is Steve, "laptop" Olsen with his curvaceous scalp facing the blond Janet who befriended Steve during the production. Also seen is Jim Moir and in orange Steve Amend.  A great time was had by all.  Thank you Jack, Jennifer, Deb, Carmen & Steve!!

More mundanely, Harry, "Cubby" Coffey promotes the upcoming World Series, and his beloved Chicago Cubs.

Doug Shureen, takes counsel from Sgt at Arms Kent Seegmiller as Doug ponies up for his daughter's recent wedding. Mark West Springs Lodge was the perfect venue.  Dancing prevailed and Uber drivers ferried weary revelers safely home.  Visa or Mastercard accepted??
John Dolinsek, recently returned from a fishing and bike-a-thon trip in Missoula MT.  He finished 50 miles!!
Justin LeRette guest of Jennifer Adams enjoys his third visit at Sunrise.
Wedding Bells rang and the rain came down for Michael Riel and bride Rebecca, Sunday October 16.  We were having such a great time getting married, eating and drinking we didn't mind one tent collapsing.  Michael heard that rain at one's wedding is a good sign.
Paul O'Rear tallies the tab while Harry Coffey prays for balance!
President Merle sports her new red Boa Persona and announces how Sunrise members Paul O'Rear and Frank Cercone hit The Rotary Foundation Dinner's raffle BIG time!
Happy Birthday Jennifer Adams!
President Merle accepts a Ft. Ticonderoga tumbler from traveler Steve Zwick, along with an American Revolution History lesson. In addition, he brought a maple sugar sample to raffle which went home with Brian Rondon.
Steve collects many obje d'Arte, including a partial costume from Rock Horror Picture Show.  Previous owner absent.
Viva McKenzie was one of three Rotarians to step up at Merle's request to fill in for the scheduled speaker who had to cancel due to illness.  Red Badger Viva is now closer to her permanent Blue.

She recalled her early years on a farm/ranch in Jamaica.  She had an affinity to supporting the under dog, and she put her friendship with less than congenial peers on the line when she stood up for a bullied friend.  Her stand earned her respect from the offenders, and needless to say, the under dog.
One of Viva's avocations is photography and she demonstrated it through her recent Gran Fondo volunteering.  Here, she illustrates her portrait of fellow Sunriser &  PDG Del Raby, in one of his "Del-egating" poses.
Deb Frances applied one of her Boeing presentation skills to show us her Czech, Welsh, German and English heritage. Additional photos included her as a cookies selling Girl Scout~ Cookie money is camping money!  A high school Cheerleader, swimmer, she loved Yosemite backpacking, listening to Harry (Cat's in the Craddle) Chapin, and driving her VW beetle which her father taught her to drive in.  As the eldest sibling, she currently takes the lead in supervising care for her nearby parents.  Her two sons. Tanner, 37 an JJ 32 are her pride and joy.
Peter Banks rounded out our three-part member program with his upcoming odyssey to the Caribbean with spouse-matey Mary on their 4 cabin Lagoon 380 Catamaran.
With many Sunrise flags in hand, Peter and Mary will be fulfilling a lifelong love of the sea.  Growing up in San Diego Mission Bay/La Jolla area, Peter has childhood memories of nautical wanderlust and his first big boat experiences in the Navy aboard the USS Wisconsin as a Naval ROTC cadet. "The guns shot 21 miles".  Rather than enroll in pilot training, Peter chose to take the Graduate School track.

Peter and Mary will sail their "Serenity" twixt and between Simpson Bay, St Kits, Antigua, St Martin (French) and Saint Maarten (Dutch) sectors of the Friendly Islands.  Within each Island, 3-4 Rotary Clubs flourish.  Bon Voyage Peter & Mary!!

ShelterBox prepares for Mosul refugees

ShelterBox and its partner, ACTED, a French nongovernmental aid agency, have been preparing for weeks to get aid supplies ready so they can respond quickly as the battle unfolds in Mosul

Today marked the start of the battle to take control of Mosul back from the Islamic State group, also known as ISIS. The city is the group's last major stronghold in Iraq. But humanitarian aid agencies have known about the military offensive, giving them an unusual opportunity to prepare for the crisis.

"It is rare for the world to get early warning of a vast human catastrophe," says Chris Warham, chief executive of ShelterBox. "The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees issued a paper in July saying this would likely be the biggest humanitarian crisis of the year — and we better get prepared."

ShelterBox, Rotary's project partner for disaster relief, and ACTED, a French nongovernmental aid agency, have teams in the city of Irbil in Iraqi Kurdistan, 53 miles (85 km) east of Mosul. They have been working since July to get aid supplies ready so they can respond quickly as the battle unfolds.

"By tomorrow, 650 of the 3,000 tents that have been deployed to Irbil will arrive," says Warham. He estimates that, without the early notice, it would have taken ShelterBox at least two and a half weeks to gather these supplies.

Tens of thousands of people have already been displaced from Mosul and surrounding areas since March. The current round of fighting could last weeks or even months and is certain to raise that number, although it's unknown just how many people remain in Mosul and in which direction they might flee.

"Our aim is to get aid to displaced families as quickly as possible," says Rachel Harvey, operations coordinator at ShelterBox, who is in Irbil. "Giving people shelter and essential items such as a solar lamp, blankets, and a water carrier will allow them a degree of dignity and security to rest and recover."

Existing camps are already near or over capacity, so other possible sites are being readied. But Warham predicts that demand will almost certainly outpace supply, which could force many families to seek shelter outside managed camps in an inhospitable landscape during a season given to storms and below-freezing overnight temperatures.

ACTED and ShelterBox have partnered many times around the world. Most recently they worked together to help people in Haiti, where the deadly force of Hurricane Matthew caused a surge in cholera cases and left thousands homeless.

The Islamic State has controlled Mosul, the oil-rich capital of Nineveh province, since June 2014. Before the invasion, the city was Iraq's second-largest and one of its most diverse.
