Santa Rosa, California, USA. In October of last year a massive wildfire was hit, 24 people died alone in some Sonoma counties in the city, more than 5 thousand houses were burned down. The building was "round barn" which was used as a stable of a winery (brewery of wine). It was one of the "Satsuma student" who went to the UK at the end of the Edo period and built by Daisuke Nagasawa (Kanae) called "King of the Grapes" in the United States.
In 1865, 13-year-old Nagasawa traveled to the UK with 18 young people including Tomonari Gomiyo and in 1996 moved to the United States with six people including Forestry et al. The "group of young Satsuma" who stands in front of JR Kagoshima Central Station in Kagoshima City is the image of this international student.
Nagasawa did not return home after the Meiji Restoration, learned wine from Thomas Lake Harris, a master who was a winemaker, and moved to Santa Rosa where a climate of Mediterranean climate was suitable for wine brewing in 1875. In 1900 he was appointed winery management from Harris and raised it to the winery representing California. After dying at the age of 82 in 1934, the wine business was not handed over, but another winery opened in part of the land owned by Nagasawa in 1994.
In the exclusive room, we exhibited Nagasawa Yukari's sword, tuxedo and glasses and introduced the achievements. With the existence of Nagasawa as a trigger, grass-roots exchanges continued for a long time, such as students coming and going between Kagoshima and Santa Rosa, and having homestays with each other.

According to the local newspaper, forest fires occurred in Calistoga, Santa Rosa North, on the evening of October 8 last year. The fire caught a strong north wind south and brought enormous damage to Santa Rosa. The exhibition room where Nagasawa's belongings were also burned down. Noriko Frazer (maiden Kyoda) who lives in Santa Rosa from Kagoshima city also burned her home. "No wonder everyone thought that fire would come up to Santa Rosa." Steve Amend, 66, president of the Kagoshima Friendship Association who accepted six students of Kagoshima at their homestay, also burned down the house with the Japanese garden. He was a member of the student branch of "Santa Rosa Friendship Association" in Kagoshima, and in June 2016 I stayed home with Amend for a week. "Santa Rosa Friendship Association" and "Kagoshima Friendship Association" have sent dozens of students alternately every year since 1987. １８６８年の明治維新から、今年で１５０周年。幕末から明治、大正、昭和、平成と続いてきた歳月を越えて、受け継がれてきたものがある。歴史がつないだ人たち、過去と未来をつなげようとする人たちの姿を描く。
米カリフォルニア州サンタローザ。昨年１０月に大規模な山火事に見舞われ、同市のあるソノマ郡内だけでも２４人が死亡、５千軒以上の住宅が全焼した。
クリスマスも近い昨年末、甚大な被害を受けた市の北側を訪れた。点在していた高級住宅はほとんどが焼け、がれきの撤去作業が進められていた。
火事の前、丘の上には真っ赤な円形の建物があった。交通量の多い道路からよく見え、街のランドマークとして親しまれていた。地元では絵はがきやカレンダーにもなり、身近な存在だった。
その建物はワイナリー（ワインの醸造所）の馬小屋として使われていた「ラウンドバーン」。幕末に英国留学した「薩摩スチューデント」の一人で、米国で「ブドウ王」と呼ばれた長沢鼎（かなえ）が建てたものだった。

１８６５年、１３歳の長沢は五代友厚ら１８人の若者らと英国に渡り、６７年には森有礼ら６人で米国に移った。鹿児島市のＪＲ鹿児島中央駅前に立つ「若き薩摩の群像」は、この留学生たちの像だ。
長沢は明治維新後も帰国せず、師とした宗教家のトマス・レイク・ハリスからワインを学び、７５年に地中海性気候の風土がワインの醸造に適していたサンタローザに移住。１９００年にはハリスからワイナリー経営を任され、カリフォルニア州を代表するワイナリーに育て上げた。
１９３４年に８２歳で死去した後、ワイン事業は引き継がれなかったが、９４年に長沢が所有していた土地の一部で別のワイナリーが開業。専用の部屋で、長沢ゆかりの刀やタキシード、グラスなどを展示して業績を紹介していた。
長沢の存在をきっかけに、鹿児島とサンタローザの間では学生らが行き交い、互いにホームステイをするなど草の根の交流が長く続いてきた。
しかし、そのシンボルであったラウンドバーンを山火事が襲った。
地元紙によると、山火事は昨年１０月８日夜、サンタローザ北のカリストガで発生。火勢は強い北風を受けて一気に南下し、サンタローザにも甚大な被害をもたらした。長沢の遺品があった展示室も全焼した。
鹿児島市出身でサンタローザに住むフレイザー（旧姓京田）典子さんも、自宅が全焼した。「まさかサンタローザまで火が来るとはみんな思ってもいなかった」。家にいた猫も、その後、行方が分からないという。
平地に広がる住宅街は無残な焼け野原と化した。しかし、あちこちに祈るようにクリスマスの飾り付けがされ、こんなメッセージも添えられていた。

これまでに鹿児島の学生６人をホームステイで受け入れた「鹿児島友好協会」のスティーブ・エイメンド会長（６６）も、日本庭園のある自宅が全焼した。
１０月８日夜に火事の情報はあったが、場所が遠かったことからエイメンドさんら家族は就寝。しかし、翌日早朝には火が迫っていることに気づいて避難した。「５分で家を出た。携帯と猫を持って、それぞれの車で逃げたんだ」。道路脇の木々が燃えるなか、車を走らせた。妻のキャサリンさんは「車の中で熱を感じた。あの感じは一生忘れられない」。煙が立ちこめるなか、前を走る車のライトを頼りに走った。
自宅を失い、夫婦は友人宅に身を寄せる。エイメンドさんは家を再建する考えだが、「がれきの片付けすら、いつ始まるのかわからない」。
エイメンドさんの被災にショックを受けた学生の一人が、鹿児島国際大４年の児玉早（さき）さん（２２）。鹿児島にある「サンタローザ友好協会」の学生支部の一員で、２０１６年６月には１週間、エイメンドさん宅にホームステイした。「カリフォルニアで火事と聞いていたけど、まさかサンタローザだとは思っていなかった」。キャサリンさんのフェイスブックの投稿で家が全焼したと知った。「ショックというか、言葉にならなかった」
「サンタローザ友好協会」と「鹿児島友好協会」は、１９８７年から毎年、交互に学生を十数人ずつ送り合ってきた。同大には学生支部「サンタローザクラブ」があり、学生交流の中心的な役割を担ってきた。
クラブは週１回の活動で語学力を鍛え、年１回の交流に備えている。火事後にあった活動の日、山火事が話題にあがった。「だれが言い出したというわけではなくて、当然のようにみんなで支援をしようという話になりました」と３年の藤崎利紗部長（２１）は語る。
学生たちがサンタローザの支援に動き出した。

幕末に海外に渡り、米カリフォルニア州サンタローザで「ブドウ王」として名をはせた薩摩藩出身の武士、長沢鼎（かなえ）。彼の存在を通して生まれた鹿児島とサンタローザのつながりが約１５０年後の今、多くの人たちを国境を越えて動かし始めた。
昨年１０月、１９８７年からサンタローザと学生の交換派遣を続けてきた「サンタローザ友好協会」の学生支部「サンタローザクラブ」の学生が、鹿児島市の鹿児島国際大の森孝晴教授の研究室に集まった。いつも通りのクラブ活動の時間だったが、話題は自然とカリフォルニアでの山火事のことになった。
「私たちに何かできないか」。支援に向け、集めた募金と千羽鶴、ビデオメッセージを現地に送ることになった。
クラブの藤崎利紗部長（２１）は、一昨年夏にサンタローザでホームステイをした。ホストファミリーは無事だったが、友達の親戚の家や、長沢が建てたワイナリーの馬小屋「ラウンドバーン」など訪れた場所が焼けた。「ショックだった。少しでも力になりたいと思った」
数日後に鹿児島市であった「明治維新体感フェス！ ２０１７」で募金活動をスタートし、商業施設や大学の学食など人が集まる所で地道に活動を展開。企業などからの協力も受け、１１月末までに約２４０万円が集まった。積極的に寄付をしてくれたのは、現地と交流した経験がある人たち。森教授は「いずれはラウンドバーンの顕彰碑などを建ててほしいと思うが、まずは生活支援。使い道は向こうに決めてもらう」。
１２月にメンバーで撮ったビデオには、これまで数年間の交流で撮影してきた写真をちりばめ、フェイスブックなどのＳＮＳでホストファミリーら関係者に発信した。
「私たちは鹿児島サンタローザクラブです。（皆さんは）とても怖い経験をしたと思う。けど、あなたたちは一人じゃないということを忘れないで」
１２月中旬にＳＮＳに投稿された動画に涙したのは、鹿児島の学生らを受け入れてきた「鹿児島友好協会」のスティーブ・エイメンド会長（６６）と妻キャサリンさん。「何度見ても涙が出てくる」と笑顔で話すキャサリンさんは、２日で４回繰り返し見たという。「この動画は私たちの心を強くしてくれるわ」と力こぶを作ってみせた。
同じ頃、学生の交換留学を担当するシャウナ・ローレンチェンさんの元には、千羽鶴が届いた。「なんて美しいのだろう。今後のことはまだ考えられていないけど、被災者の家にまわして、たくさんの人に見てもらいたいわ」。いつか長沢の展示室が再建されたとき、千羽鶴も展示したいという。
鹿児島とサンタローザの交流は、３０年以上続いていてきた。
エイメンドさんは「長沢という一人の男のおかげでできたこの関係は、特別だ」。ローレンチェンさんも「これは、長く続いてきた人と人との絆です。これからも大事にしたい」と話す。
支援活動に携わった藤崎さんは「長沢鼎は１３歳で留学して、アメリカで大きなことをやった。今の私たちも、ちゃんと目標を持てば、なにかを成し遂げられると教えてくれたと思う」と笑顔で語った。
