The Program for December 21st

DARK THIS WEEK - Merry Christmas!!!!!

Meeting Highlights 12/14

Holiday Favorites!!!

Elsie Allen High School Choral with Director Kyle Thompson and Accompanist John treated everyone's seasonal music appetites with original arrangements of holiday favorites.  "Ding Dong Merrily Along"  started the medlies which included Earth Wind and Fires's composition of "September", a swinging rendition of "let it Snow" by  Dusty and Allyson.  We also learned the difference between an medley and a "match up".  A match up is more of a challenge and the Choral aced it!

Kyle reminded us of his students Spring 2018 show "A Touch of Brass" March 18.  He also thanked the Club for their purchase-replacement of the band's retired baritone saxiphone.  With the help of a Rotary District Matching Grant, the $6K instrument is now the newest member.

Who has their attention?

President Doug presents Director Thompson support for his Department's musical programs.

Penny Millar and her new member Monique Dixon!

There goes Ross, posting on FB!

Shauna Lorenzen presents a "Senbazuru", from the students at IUK (University of Kagoshima). In Japanese, Senbazuru means a thousand fold-paper cranes together on a string. It is a gift to the fire victims with wishes of health and happiness. The University sponsors many of the students who come to Santa Rosa with the SRKSEP program. They wanted the people of Santa Rosa to know we are in their thoughts.

Following up on Shauna's remarks regarding  Japan, Steve Amend reported that on Wednesday the 20th, Mr. Tomoya Nozaki of Asahi Daily News (one of the biggest newspapers in Japan) will arrive to tour the fire devastation and learn more about the connection between Japan and Santa Rosa with Kanae Nagasawa.

Left to right, Max Bridges, Steve Amend, Harry Coffey and Leroy Carlenzoli receive replacement Paul Harris Fellow recognitions from Foundation Chair Randy Seelye.  These four Sunrisers lost their acknowledgements and all their possessions in the Tubbs Fire.  The Rotary Foundation provided the memorabilia gratefully.

Napa Hike n Bite
Napa Beckons Trekkers

Marty Behr always manages to outdo his last venue.  This hike was no exception, including exceptional wine country terrain and cuisine.

Oh yes, and art!

The Napa River was also featured.

Subject to interpretation.  The monthly Club hikes generally select easily accessible yet notable attractions within an hour of Santa Rosa.

Former Golf Course Tees Up Fresh Produce

In Covington, Washinngton, USA, what used to be a golf course is now home to a farm. The shift from putting to potting has created a way to fight hunger, helping ensure that Washington residents who visit local food banks can add fresh items to their diets.

Elk Run Farm provides fresh vegetables to 12 local hunger relief organizations served by the South King County Food Coalition.

Elk Run Farm, launched in 2015, provides fresh vegetables to 12 local hunger relief organizations served by the South King County Food Coalition. The farm leases about 6 acres of the golf course property for a nominal fee, and organizers hope to triple its size within a few years, says David Bobanick, executive director of Rotary First Harvest.

Rotary First Harvest collaborated with the Food Coalition and other organizations in the Seattle area to develop the farm. Grants from local Rotary clubs funded installation of infrastructure such as fencing, buildings, irrigation equipment, and hoop houses to prolong the growing season.

“There are a lot of things like garlic or tomatoes or highly nutrient-dense crops that are otherwise really hard to get donated that the food bank farm is growing,” says Bobanick, of the Rotary Club of Mercer Island. “Their model is that they’re going to listen to what the clients and the food banks say are most needed.”

Elk Run Farm is just one effort of Rotary First Harvest in fighting hunger and food waste. The organization acts mainly as a “nonprofit produce broker,” using commercial and nonprofit resources such as truckers, farmers, packing facilities, and food banks to keep food from being thrown away. The group leads the Harvest Against Hunger program, which works with smaller farms to pick up produce for markets and other produce recovery efforts. Rotary First Harvest also developed the Farm to Food Pantry program, which helps participating food pantries buy fresh produce directly from small growers. “It’s a really cool model, especially since many small-scale growers are just barely able to keep their businesses solvent,” Bobanick says.

Rotary First Harvest plans to stretch even further to connect more organizations that fight hunger and poor nutrition. “Harvest Against Hunger, Farm to Food Pantry, and local Rotary support will all play a role in this effort,” Bobanick says.
