The Program for August 3rd.

Our own John Jones

Adventures in Europe and a Cruise Down the Danube

John needs little introduction to this club. As managing partner of Linkenheimer LLP CPA’s and Advisors he has traveled far and wide.

He will share some of those travels with the club.

On a regular basis, our resident photo pros Warren Smith and Jack Strange submit pictures of what is going on at the weekly meetings. You can always find the most recent pictures at the websites photo journal called "Meeting Sighting" Please note that all the meeting photos for the entire Rotary year are at this location with the most recent on the last page.

Thanks for all the great pictures Warren and Ross! Link to Meeting Sightings. The most recent are on the last page!

    Meeting Highlights

    Meeting Highlights

What better way to start a meeting than extend the circle of membership:  Left to right new member MJ Girard accepts his new member memorabilia as sponsor and Past President Merle Hayes looks on as Membership Coordinator Jim "Tall Dude" Moir administers the Blue Badge protocol.  No stranger to Rotary MJ joins us directly from Windsor Rotary, coming aboard for a more compatible commute-Rotary connection.  Bring MJ one of your business/calling cards and help him graduate early from Blue to Red Badge!

Our speaker, Probation Officer Jerred Slocum showed us the video of his incredible shooting survival as a Police Officer.  He was shot in the head and still managed to assist his partner in apprehending the perpetrator.  After long years of healing Jerred resumed his career as a Probation Officer, serving and protecting the public.

Paul Stathatos, former very active member came to rekindle friendships and goodwill!

Past President Peter Hoberg promotes his upcoming Pedal for Polio bike ride.  Have you pledged toward his 300 mile trek?

Jon Stark ponders letting go of his travel booty, premium maple syrup.  Jon surrendered in generous spirit the sweet to President Doug.

Rotary Foundation Director Rand Seelye pitches for Peter's polio ride and Paul Harris Sustaining Membership.

President Doug recognizes Sunriser Ross Andress' many contributions to the club, especially his and spouse Stacey's long standing commitment to Elsie Allen High School Interact Club and Foundation.

Left, James Eakin and Sunrise dad Tom.  James is a veteran of the Club's Nicaraguan health projects.

Paul O'Rear presents Pres Doug a tribute from Paul and spouse Penny's recent respite.

Steve Zwick's guest will hopefully come back!

Hip Hip Hooray for Jack Strange' report of remission of his cancer!!!  Keep the hat Jack ~~ very cool!!!

Michael Riel smiles as he recall his 6,000 mile odyssey logged on his trusty BMW motorcycle.

President Doug keeps order on the Sunrise floor.

Past President Nancy Aita briefs members on the necessity of good cognitive function!

    Surgical Center Enters Second Phase

    Ready~Set~Go!!!

    The windows are IN!!

    The lights are ON!!!

The staff is eager to commence installing equipment.

Stay tuned for rapidly developing progess updates!!!

THANK YOU TO ALL OUR PROJECT PARTNERS NEAR AND FAR!!!

The roof beams are setting in place!

    The blocks are mounting!!!

Progress is advancing daily.  Over the course of two weeks, the perimeter and interior walls are well defined.

After nearly six years of negotiating, planning and renegotiating, the Nicaraguan Ministry of Health, MINSA, and San Juan Rio Relief began their partnership through the efforts of Sunrise Rotarian John Jones and San Juan Rio Relief Representative and Nicaraguan Rafael Preslyn.

MINSA and Sabalos Regional Clinic Staff pose on the site of the Surgical Center.

John and Rafael have championed this most favored International Project of Sunrise Rotary, with hundreds of hours of organizing and promoting collaboration between Rotary Clubs in Nicaragua and the United States. Now that construction has commenced, funded through local Rotary Clubs mainly in Sonoma County, the 2,000 square feet Surgical Center will ultimately be equipped with supplies and instruments provided via a Rotary Global Grant.

Stay tuned for regular updates on the construction status!

Congratulations John (kneeling) and Rafael on your groundbreaking patience and Service Above Self Vision!

While Sonoma County has had record setting rains,  the Rio San Juan region of Nicaragua receives up to 15 meters of precipitation during this season.  Here, a road leading the way for this semi-truck's load of construction material to the Sabalos Clinic is delayed during a mud rescue operation.  Progress is advancing between storms.  Stay posted!!

    News From RI

On to Toronto for 2018 convention

You’ve barely unpacked from Atlanta, but it’s not too soon to start thinking about next June, when the Rotary International Convention will be held in Toronto.

Toronto is a cosmopolitan city. Over 140 languages and dialects are spoken there. Half of Toronto residents were born outside Canada, and immigrant communities shape the city’s personality.

Forget your assumptions about Canadian food; it’s more than poutine and maple syrup. Toronto has become a culinary destination city, with the cultural melting pot reflected in the fusion cuisine at many restaurants as well as authentic regional cuisine from around the world.

As you are strolling through the streets of Toronto, you might get the feeling that you’ve seen them before, and you probably have. The city is a center of film and television production, and streetscapes have been used to stand in for New York (Moonstruck), Chicago (Chicago), Boston (Good Will Hunting), and even Tokyo (Pacific Rim).

Toronto is a center of the performing arts. The National Ballet of Canada, Canadian Opera Company, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and dozens of theater companies call the city home.

In Toronto, you really can find inspiration around every corner.
