Follow the money: Stories from the front-lines of the fraud fight
Jul. 21, 2022
I am a CPA and Certified Fraud Examiner with over 20 years experience as a fraud investigator, corporate controller, and financial analyst. My practice focuses on financial reconstructions, financial forensic examinations, including fraud, embezzlement, income tracing, fiduciary misconduct, loan compliance, and elder financial abuse. I have presented findings at mediations and ADR hearings, and I volunteer my forensic services to Law Enforcement. I am the past Chairperson of the Sonoma County Financial Abuse Specialist Team (FAST) and a past member of the Napa County FAST. I investigate financial fraud. I seek answers to the age-old question - "What happened to my money?" I provide transparency where there was none. I reconstruct financial history when disasters, incompetence or deliberate malfeasance make financial statements unreliable or inaccurate. I "follow the money" to investigate embezzlements, unreported assets, and underreported income for disputes including: divorce, bankruptcy, insolvency, reorganization, delinquent taxes, loan compliance, financing or investments for early stage venture capital and international mergers and acquisitions. I investigate financial crimes and scams against the elderly and dependent adults and work closely with law enforcement to find and stop the wrong-doers. I am not deterred by complicated, multi-jurisdictional, multiple businesses, and cash-based groups. The messier, the better. My raison d'etre is to provide transparency and demand accountability. |

Vegetarian Dining in Sonoma County
Jul. 28, 2022
Heather Irwin is the dining editor for Sonoma Magazine and the Press Democrat and the founder of BiteClub, which jabs an irreverent fork at the restaurant scene in Sonoma County. An avid eater and writer, she more than 16 years of experience covering local restaurants, chefs and food and has been a journalist for more than 25 years. Heather is also the founder of Sonoma Family Meal, a disaster-based non-profit founded in the darkest hours of the 2017 Tubbs wildfire. Working directly with dozens of local chefs including Kyle Connaughton, Douglas Keane, a team of Stark reality restaurant chefs, and many others, SFM served more than 80,000 meals in the days, weeks and months after more than 5,000 homes were lost. During the pandemic, SFM served 250,00 meals in collaboration with 11 non-profit organizations to support vulnerable seniors, farm workers, families and those in quarantine and isolation. SFM supported local restaurants to prepare the food, paying out $1.7 million and keeping hundreds of restaurant workers employed. the organization has also recently built a 3,100 square foot emergency kitchen. For that work, Heather has been a Jefferson Award Winner, Spirit of Sonoma Winner and was honored by the Community Child Care Council, among others. She holds a Master’s degree in Journalism from Northwestern University and has moved 36 times, settling in Sonoma County in 2003. Heather has two very quirky rescue dachshund that like to stare at her while laying on her pillow. |

2021-22 for the Interact Club of St. Isabella
Aug. 11, 2022
Our speakers on August 11, Lily Rubio and Zela-Lee Flores, served as co-presidents in 2021-22 for the Interact Club of St. Isabella, a community-based club in Terra Linda, and are now entering freshmen at Marin Catholic High School. After facing an 18-month hiatus due to Covid, Lily and Zela-Lee took the initiative to restart a dormant club with the help of their faculty advisor. The biggest challenges they faced weren’t finding eager new members; but remembering and rekindling those traditions that made the club as successful as it had been pre-pandemic. This is their inspiring story. |

On to Mars!
Sep. 15, 2022
Peter grew up in San Diego, CA and attended La Jolla High School, Stanford University M.S. (EE), and Pennsylvania State University Ph.D. (Physics). Work experience includes duty as Lt. U.S.Navy, Office of Naval Research, Washington, D.C.; Prof (Applied Physics) U.C. San Diego; Prof (Physics), Utah State University; Prof (Electrical Engineering, Stanford University), Dean of Engineering (Univ. Michigan). Other activities: Partner in several venture capital firms in Palo Alto, CA, and Senior Advisor to the President of the National Academy of Sciences, Washington, D.C. September 15 topic: On to Mars! The USA and other advanced technology countries of the world are engaged in an informal competition to send and return the humans to Mars. The first step of this new space race is the identification and development of national bases on Earth’s Moon, from which space vehicles will be able travel between Earth and the Moon and from the Moon to Mars. With respect to deployment of cargo and personnel to Mars, it seems reasonable to consider building a specialized a space vehicle which carries cargo between Earth’s Moon and one of the moons of Mars. Transport of goods between Earth and our Moon would be based on current designs of spacecraft. At Mars, transfer of cargo between the surface of Mars and one of its moons would be done via a new cargo transport optimized to that planet's smaller gravity and its much lower atmospheric density. In any case, the first steps to go to Mars are underway in terms of overall goals and international partners participating in the U.S. plans for creating transportation and occupancy capabilities for sustained human presence on Mars. |

CASA of Sonoma County (Court Ordered Special Advocates)
Sep. 22, 2022
The Sonoma County Court Appointed Special Advocates Program (CASA) serves abused and neglected children coming before the Juvenile Court for protection and rehabilitation services. The CASA Program provides every foster child a trained volunteer who will act as a consistent role model, advocate, and potential life connection.
Anytime a child is abused or neglected, it’s a tragedy – one that all too often scars victims for a lifetime. At CASA of Sonoma County, we help children victims of child abuse and neglect heal, feel safe and loved and have a “voice” in court, in schools, and in the community and thrive. Our Court Appointed Special Advocates, also called CASA volunteers are trusted adults in these children’s lives so they can have a chance of a successful future. They make sure foster kids don’t get lost in the overburdened legal and social service systems or languish in unsupportive foster homes. CASA volunteers stay with children until their court case is closed and the child is placed in a safe, permanent home. A CASA volunteer, trained by our program and appointed by the Juvenile Court Judge, provides the court with the comprehensive and objective information the court needs to make the most well-informed decisions and to help ensure positive outcomes for children and youth. These individuals not only advocate for children within the court, child welfare, and school systems but also form relationships with them that last for years. They receive ongoing support from CASA program staff to help them advocate effectively on a child’s behalf. |
