Official District Governor Visit
Sep. 17, 2020
The 'official visit' to your club by the District Governor. The purpose of this Governor's visit is to address the club regarding Rotary International and the district's goals, objectives, and issues that are important to the club and its membership. You are encouraged to invite spouses to attend this meeting. Rotary Opens Opportunities This year’s theme “Rotary Opens Opportunities” could never be more relevant than now. Our new Rotary year starts off with most clubs holding online meetings and facing challenges with fundraising and community projects as we all practice social distancing. But it has also taught us new methods to connect with each other and given us new opportunities to serve our community and world. The humanitarian service Rotary brings is needed now more than ever.
I look forward to a great Rotary year with each and every member!

The DNA Jane Doe Project
Oct. 29, 2020
Margaret Press, PhD To answer her burning question “How can genetic genealogy help identify John and Jane Does?” Margaret Press co-founded the DNA Doe Project in 2017 with Forensic Genealogist Dr. Colleen Fitzpatrick. After months of work hunting down labs, experts, bones and donations, they tackled their first case in September 2017 and incorporated as a non-profit the following month. The subsequent success stories have provided the answer: persistence, patience, and a team of skilled and spirited volunteers. That’s how it’s done. Margaret grew up in Los Angeles, California where at age 15 she inherited a passion for genealogy from her grandmother. She graduated from UC Berkeley with a degree in Linguistics and subsequently earned her doctorate at UCLA, specializing in Native American languages and child language development. From her extensive field work she published a descriptive grammar of Chemehuevi, a nearly extinct dialect of the Uto-Aztecan family. While working most of her life in software development, Margaret also fell into mystery writing. Two published novels set in Salem, Massachusetts were followed by essays and short stories, and a true crime based on a 1991 murder in her own neighborhood. The book inspired several documentaries, including an Unsolved Mysteries segment in 1996 and a 1998 episode in the A&E series City Confidential. She has also taught numerous courses in mystery and crime writing. When DNA testing redefined the genealogy landscape, Margaret joined the impassioned group of citizen scientists who would propel this new field to where it is today. She began with setting up several Y-DNA surname projects. Once autosomal testing reached critical mass and its potential became apparent for helping in unknown parentage searches, she – like many others – became hooked on the unique challenges of building family trees forward in time, rather than backward. The satisfaction that comes from helping an adoptee is profound and addicting. But extending this methodology to her current mission – returning a name to an unidentified victim – brings a whole new level of reward. Margaret is a proud parent and grandparent, with descendants of her own to carry her mitochondrial haplogroup C1d and passion for genealogy down her family tree. |

Racism & Social Justice
Jan. 14, 2021
Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotarians were shaken by the killing of George Floyd in June of 2020, one of a series of killings of Blacks by police and vigilantes. At Rotary, we denounce racism, celebrate diversity and demand ethical leadership. Our Club has a 35-year history of providing volunteer time and grants to both community and international non-profit organizations, serving people of all races and nationalities. We are committed to bringing people together to do good in our community and the world. While we have evolved over our 35-year history, we know we have more work to do individually and as a Club to help create a more just, open, diverse world. With that in mind, our January 14 program will focus on educating our Club members and guests about the history of Blacks in America since the advent of slavery in 1619, through slavery, Jim Crow, the Civil Rights Movement to the present day. This will be done through a video by noted historians, comments by members of our Club, and a review of the actions of Rotary Intl regarding Black Lives Matter. We plan to organize a Black Lives Matter discussion group following the program, open to all interested. Follow-on programs and other actions will take place later. Please join us. |

Brian Benn began working for PG&E Construction building the Geothermal power plants and developing hydrogen sulfide (H2S) abatement systems in June of 1978 just 5 days after graduating from the University of Wyoming in Chemical Engineering. As construction neared completion Brian began working in Plant Operations, optimizing and improving the environmental control processes. Joining the Calpine team in 1999 when the various steam suppliers and plant operators were brought under the Calpine umbrella, he took the opportunity to expand his geothermal experience to the underground steam supply, fulfilling his lifelong passion for geology. Brian has authored several technical papers on geothermal H2S abatement technology, plant efficiency, and down-hole corrosion protection. Brian holds a patent for an unique elemental mercury vapor capture system utilized at The Geysers. Currently, Brian leads the Environmental Chemistry department at the Geysers making sure the geothermal resource remains clean, green, and renewable. |

Rotary Hike (moderate), in Annadel, 10 am, meet at end of Oak Mesa Dr., Oakmont Our February walk is in the ANNADEL HIGH COUNTRY, but we are going to cheat and gain most of the elevation into the high country by car. But the hike will still have quite a bit of gentle uphill, so we are grading this a MODERATE HIKE. About half of the hike is on paved and gravel roads, which will facilitate social distancing. The other half is on trails, where will have to spread out in lines to social distance. It is a beautiful area of meadows and oak and conifer woodlands. Meeting Time: 10:00am at the cul de sac at the end of Oak Mesa Drive in Oakmont. Enter Oakmont at Oakmont Drive entrance off of Hwy 12. Drive 1.5 miles and look for Oak Mesa Drive on your right. It is the first street past the golf course clubhouse on your right. Turn right and go uphill to the dead end at the cul de sac. Park and meet the group there. Bring masks, water and good walking shoes. Jackets if weather requires. Walking sticks if you prefer. Optional BYO Sack Lunch about Noon following the walk -- At a picnic area near the Oakmont entrance. Bring a folding chair or blanket. Guests welcome!
