Jennifer Gray Thompson is a lifelong resident of Sonoma Valley and resides in the Springs area of Sonoma Valley with her family. She attended Santa Rosa Junior College and graduated from Dominican University in 2001 with degrees in English and History. After teaching for 10 years at Ursuline and Cardinal Newman High Schools, as well as Upward Bound at Napa Valley College, Jennifer went on to earn a master’s degree in Public Administration from University of Southern California’s Price School of Public Policy. Post-graduate school, Jennifer worked for District One from 2013 to 2017, covering the Sonoma Valley, for Sonoma County Board of Supervisors. After the devastating fires of October 2017, she accepted her current position as Executive Director of Rebuild Northbay Foundation, an organization dedicated to helping our region rebuild better, greener, safer, and faster. Adults over age 85 are the fastest growing population segment in Sonoma County. How, and how well are we meeting the housing and care needs of our aging seniors? What are you doing now to prepare for your own future needs? Join us on February 20 to learn (and share) more!
Rotarian and guest speaker, Eloise Tweeten, knows first-hand the consequences of “lack of planning” when it comes to aging seniors. Her father at age 89 and aunt at age 93 both waited until a health crisis sent them to the hospital and they ultimately needed 24-hour care & supervision-but not “nursing home” care. The challenges Eloise encountered while trying to manage her aunt's care in Tucson, Arizona by long distance inspired her to provide a needed service to other elders and their families. Her father moved into a continuing care community near his home in Madison, Wisconsin, and her aunt moved to a smaller care home in Tucson. Eloise was her aunt’s durable power of attorney. Eloise Tweeten, founder of Tweeten Eldercare Advisors, started her business in 2008. As an eldercare advisor specializing in assisted living placement, she considers her work to be a cross between social services and real estate. She also works closely with other senior service professionals throughout the North Bay to find the resources needed to help older adults age gracefully, whether at home or in a “home away from home.” Eloise was born, raised and educated in Madison, Wisconsin and has lived in California since 1985. She holds an undergraduate degree in psychology, and a Master of Science degree in business with a concentration in human resource management. With a background in Human Resources and mediation, Eloise had 20 years’ experience in management and consulting prior to starting Tweeten Eldercare Advisors. In her work as a community mediator as well as in the Human Resources field, she had always been drawn to finding win-win solutions to challenging life situations. Throughout her varied professional experience, the common denominator has been helping people navigate difficult transitions. In her current work, Eloise or an associate will first meet with a senior and/or family member and help identify both short and longer-term housing and care options. This process often involves touring senior communities and care homes in order to find the best fit for an individual who can no longer live safely in their own home. Her services are paid for by the community if a client moves, so there is no cost to the senior, much like a buyer's agent in real estate. She considers geographic parameters, likes and dislikes, financial considerations, and care needs to identify the most appropriate options, because “one size does NOT fit all”! |

Dr. Greg Granderson Dr. Greg Granderson has worked within the California Community College educational system for 38 years as an administrator and faculty member. Twenty-five years at Santa Rosa Junior College. With his last assignment as Dean of Students Services at the Petaluma campus.
Dr. Granderson has directed and coordinated a wide range of student services departments including Counseling, Admission and Records, Financial Aid, and Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOP&S). He has developed programs and written curriculum and is regarded across the state as a leader in the areas of accreditation, aid to students, and counseling.
Dr. Granderson served as a member of the Executive Board of the California Statewide Academic Senate working to improve the educational achievement and success of all community college students across California. Additionally, he served as a member of the Accrediting Commission for Community and Junior Colleges.
Dr Granderson holds a Bachelor degree and a Master and Ph.D. degrees from the University of La Verne. He has presented at both local and national educational conferences.

Clark Mr. William Clarke has over 40 years of experience in higher education with 25 years directing and supervising educational opportunity and equity programs at community college, state university and research-university levels. Mr. Clarke owns and operates a national education consultant firm based in Santa Rosa, California. Clarke & Associates has successfully assisted numerous non-profit agencies, school districts, colleges and universities across the country in acquiring and operating state, federal, foundation and private programs. Mr. Clarke has a wide range and depth of experience in program management, evaluation, grants development and management, and conducts program reviews and personnel trainings. Mr. Clarke possesses a keen knowledge of the federal TRiO programs’ policies and guidelines. |

Senior Advocacy Services

Crista Barnett Nelson, Executive Director of Senior Advocacy Services, is a 28 year veteran of the non-profit world. After spending 18 years with a Petaluma Residential Treatment Center and special education school for adolescents as the CFO, she transitioned to the world of seniors. It was the position at an Adult Day Care for seniors, specializing in people afflicted with dementia, that she cemented her appreciation for the myriad of challenges that are brought on through aging. Senior Advocacy Services serves the senior community with its free, unbiased services through three programs: Medicare Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP); the Long Term Care Ombudsman Program; and the Elder Justice Initiative. Crista currently serves as the Board President of the state association California Long Term Care Ombudsman and is a board member for the Congress of California Seniors. In November, she was elected as a Board Member for the Petaluma Health Care District. |

NewGen Peacebuilders

NewGen Peacebuilders is a youth peace education program designed for high school and university students (14 to 25). It draws on principles of peace education familiar to Rotary Peace Fellows as well as best practices in peace and global education for youth. The program was designed by Rotary Peace Fellow Patricia Shafer (US) with collaboration and input from Rotary Peace Fellows Phill Gittins (UK), Carla Lineback (US) and Pranisa Ekachote (Thailand). One of the key elements/outcomes of this youth peace education program is a team peace education project that youth complete. These projects have spanned education inequality, poverty, domestic violence, international/cultural bridgebuilding and peace conference planning and management. The program content is global/universal in nature, but also adapted/adaptable to local language, issues and cultural circumstances. |

Migration and the Upending of the Western Political Order

Mark Randol retired in May 2011 after 35 years of military and federal civil service and moved to Oakmont. He has taught college courses in domestic terrorism and counterintelligence; lectures at the University of Southern California’s Viterbe School of Engineering on aviation security; and teaches U.S. Coast Guard-certified maritime security courses. He also provides security consulting services. Prior to retirement from the government Mr. Randol served as the senior specialist in domestic intelligence and counterterrorism at the Congressional Research Service (CRS) in Washington, DC, where he provided non-partisan research and policy analysis for members of Congress and their staffs. He was also the Director of Counterterrorism Policy at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) where he was responsible for ensuring the Secretary’s priorities were reflected in interagency counterterrorism plans and policies. In that role, he represented DHS at national-level coordinating bodies including the National Security Council’s Counterterrorism Security Group, charged with overseeing U.S. Government counterterrorism efforts. Other professional assignments include serving as one of the original cadre of Transportation Security Administration Federal Security Directors. He has 14 years experience as a civil aviation security manager, inspector, and intelligence analyst with the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C. and Brussels, Belgium. He also served as a Senior Aviation Security Officer with the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). in Montréal, Canada. Mr. Randol served for 8-1/2 years in the U.S. Air Force, with assignments in Taipei, Taiwan; Stuttgart, Germany; Osan, Korea; and Fort Meade, Maryland; as well as 3-1/2 years as a civilian on the Army Intelligence Staff at the Pentagon. Mr. Randol is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley, earned a Masters Degree in Government (National Security Studies) from Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and has completed all Ph.D course work and comprehensive exams at the Catholic University of America; Washington D.C. He also graduated from the U.S. Government Senior Executive Service development program at the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, Virginia. |

Community Needs in Response to Coronavirus

With the economy at a standstill, tens of thousands of Sonoma County residents suddenly find themselves in an incredibly vulnerable place. Nonprofits are seeing huge increases in demand for emergency food, financial assistance, and other safety net supports to make it through this crisis. Elly Seelye Grogan, Senior Philanthropy Officer with Community Foundation Sonoma County, will share what the Foundation is learning about the most pressing community needs right now, what nonprofits are doing to help as well as how they are being impacted themselves, and the Foundation’s response. Community Foundation Sonoma County is the local hub for philanthropy, connecting people, ideas, and resources to benefit all who live here. Since 1983 the Community Foundation has invested more than $225 million in Sonoma County through grants and scholarships. Today the Foundation has more than $175 million in assets and works with hundreds of donors to inspire greater philanthropy to benefit this community. Elly serves as a philanthropic advisor to donors with the Community Foundation and previously oversaw grantmaking in the areas of health and human services and the environment. Prior to joining the Foundation she worked for nonprofits both in Sonoma County (including Social Advocates for Youth) and in Oregon; her most recent role was with StoveTeam International, a nonprofit promoting clean cook stoves that started out of the Eugene Southtowne Rotary Club. Elly was a member of the Southtowne Rotary Club while working for StoveTeam, and served as the club’s International Services chair. She is better known to Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotarians as Randy Seelye’s daughter and joined club eyeglass trips to Nicaragua and Western Samoa. Elly was born and raised in Santa Rosa and is a graduate of Santa Rosa High School. She earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon with a dual major in International Studies and Spanish. She earned a master’s degree in Multicultural Education at University of San Francisco. . |
