Chuck Commanda
My name is Chuck Commanda and I am an Algonquin from the Kitigan ZIbi Anishnabeg First Nation. I am a birch bark canoe builder having learned the craft at the tender age of 10-12 years old from my Grandparents Mary and William Commanda. I’ve been teaching birch bark canoe making to other First Nation communities to preserve the craft. Lately I’ve been doing a lot of builds in high schools promoting truth and reconciliation as well as teaching students about our culture and things like the 7 Sacred Grandfather Teachings, the 7 Fires Prophecy etc.
