From Plastic to Plants, Making Today's Fertilizers
Apr. 14, 2021 7:30 a.m.
George Sanchez has always been a farmer at heart. He was raised in Mexico and the United States. Several years ago he got a job at a local restaurant chain. In the past year, during the pandemic, George was stunned by the number of inorganic items, such as gloves and masks, that were being thrown in the trash. A close friend suggested that he watch the documentary "Kiss the Ground". This film convinced George that he needed to change his path. He is now focused on converting organic, biodegradable waste into an organic product that can positively affect the environment. This project has enabled George to do something that he's always wanted to do: give something back to his community.
George has established a non-profit company that currently helps farmers and distributors convert pre-consumer produce into a bioactive medium that yields immediate results.
This organic substance can:
1. Replace petroleum-based pesticides with an ecologically sound, organic insect repellent, saving producers up to 90%
2. Reduce water usage approximately
80% by enabling the soil to retain more moisture
3. Help cleanse "sludge" in stagnant water
4. Increase harvest yields 20%

Without the Rotary Club I Wouldn't Be Here
May 19, 2021 7:30 a.m.
Presentation: "Without the Rotary Club I Wouldn't Be Here". At age 9, in a small Canadian town, Jim was in a horrible accident and almost died. He will tell us how a local Rotary Club stepped in and helped save his life and kept his family from becoming destitute. Jim will talk about what the Rotary club meant to him and his family and the impact he has been able to have in the world as a result. Dr. Jim Mitchell is a Canadian-born computer scientist. In 1962, while a student at the University of Waterloo, he and 3 other undergraduates developed a fast compiler for the Fontran programming language known as WHATFOR. Since then, Dr. Mitchell has had an extensive career in computer-related endeavors at Xerox, Java, Sun Microsystems, and Oracle just to name a few.
Since 2013, he has been on the board of directors of the Shrul & Kay Curci Foundation, which funds basic research in the life sciences.

Livestreaming: Painting is for Everyone
May 26, 2021 7:30 a.m.
Artist Will Maller will recreate a Plein Air style painting presentation for us. He will talk us through the artistic process and tell us about his inspiration and experiences as an artist. I have had a love of the visual creative experience since childhood, with art being first a way of getting into trouble, then a way of staying out of trouble, then just a natural part of who I am. My work has always begun with observation and a representational impulse. Then on to the challenge of line, shape, value, and color, blended with design principles and varying degrees of abstraction to arrive at yet another compelling visualization. A new reality is created, one which begins with observation but proceeds in its own unique direction. My artistic efforts define a body of work that has a very personal reality. Fused into the drawing and paint media are both my struggle and delight in the creative process. Each painting begins as an invitation, proceeds as an adventure, and ends as a gift-whether a joy in itself or a lesson learned, whether just for me or to be shared with others. Then I wait patiently for that next invitation." |
