The Humanity Of Diversity and the Beauty Of Art
Sep. 30, 2020 7:30 a.m.
As a woman, Hindu, Muslim, artist, and mother, I work to create harmony by expressing the universality of humanity through paintings, sculpture, and calligraphy. Inspired by the imagery, sculpture, and writings of my Indian heritage and Islamic spirituality, I use my artistic voice to break down the barriers that divide in order to foster peace and understanding. At birth, I was given the life-defining challenge of a left hand without fingers. Seeing the unity of an all-encompassing God, I was able to transcend the barriers often set-forth in the traditions of religion, culture and the cultural perceptions of handicaps. My personal triumphs have been defined and shaped by the simple principle of faith in The Divine, as the compelling force which has guided my life and work. My works are greatly influenced by my studies and experiences in different cultures around the world. After graduating in Fine Arts from Maharaja Sayajirao University in Baroda, India, I lived and worked in Iran and Kuwait, where I was exposed to a wealth of Islamic arts and Arabic calligraphy. Calligraphy, miniatures, and the folk art of Islam and the Hindu tradition continue to influence my work today. My most recent series, “Celebration of Calligraphy”, seeks to enlighten and awaken the spiritual connection of all human beings through the lyrical and fluid imagery of Arabic calligraphy and Islamic patterns. Another series entitled “We Are All One” reinforces the scientific concept of the ‘chain of life,’ with each species depending on another and together maintaining the balance of life on Earth. As a visual artist I have had almost 40 solo shows nationally and internationally, and have won several prestigious awards including the East Bay Community’s Fund for Artists in 2012 and 2014. the City of Berkeley’s Individual Artist Grant Award in 2014, 2015, and 2016. I have public art pieces on display in [Bethlehem Pennsylvania and San Diego, California], and I have also written and published five books. |

Urban Confluence - Iconic Structures
Nov. 04, 2020 7:30 a.m.
The mission of the San Jose Light Tower Corporation (SJLTC) is to build an iconic landmark for San Jose and Silicon Valley that is respected by people around the world and is the must-see place to visit in Silicon Valley for both locals and visitors. The project is NOT a “light tower”. The founders were simply inspired by the original San Jose Electric Light Tower that existed from 1881 to 1915.
The organization plans to create an iconic world-class destination landmark for Silicon Valley. It will be an impressive and recognizable symbolic structure appropriate for the unique Silicon Valley region that is internationally respected and recognized as the world-wide center of innovation and will become the architectural and artistic legacy of the current generation of leaders in San Jose and Silicon Valley. This landmark will be a major enhancement to downtown San Jose and be an important catalyst for Silicon Valley culture and long-term regional economic development.
The project design will come from “Urban Confluence Silicon Valley”, an international open ideas competition that was launched in July 2019 and will conclude in early 2021 with the winning design approved by SJLTC and the San Jose City Council.
Steve Borkenhagen has been an entrepreneur and business owner in Silicon Valley since 1975. He opened Camera One Theater, the first repertory cinema in San Jose, along with partners in 1975. During the years since, Steve has founded and operated multiple bars and restaurants in the South Bay Area including Eulipia Restaurant from 1977 to 2012. He studied Classics at San Jose State University after attending Santa Clara University and New College of California in San Francisco.
Steve has been an active member of the Rotary Club of San Jose for over 25 years, participating in numerous philanthropic domestic and international programs.

Honoring Veterans Day
Nov. 11, 2020
As we reflect back on the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II one area of the war is often overlooked: the prisoners of war of Imperial Japan. Where the survival rate of those Americans in the hands of Nazi Germany was over 95% those who were POWs in the Pacific theater had a higher death rate of nearly 1 in 2. Professor Thompson will concentrate on telling the story of the American soldiers of the Philippine Islands. This talk is based on interviews with survivors that she conducted over twenty-five years for the basis of her films on the prisoner-of-war experience. The story is one of the will to survive through fortitude and surprising humor in horrendous circumstances. Professor Thompson is a 3 time Emmy award-winning filmmaker and composer. Professor Thompson's recent work is Survival Through Art narrated by Alec Baldwin. This feature-length documentary continues to contribute to her body of work featuring the prisoners-of-war of Imperial Japan during World War II. LGMR is now meeting digitally using Zoom. New Research In The Search for Extraterrestrial Life
Dec. 02, 2020 7:30 a.m.
Carrie Paterson is an artist, writer, and the publisher of DoppelHouse Press. She is based in Los Angeles and has a background in literature, critical theory, and sculpture, with degrees from Yale (B.A. 1994) and University of California Irvine (MFA, 2001). Her essays, reviews and critical articles have been published in magazines, art and culture publications, and books, and she is the co-author of Escape Home: Rebuilding a Life After the Anschluss, the memoirs of her emigre architect father who was a Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice. Carrie has done research projects and written several papers about human factors in space travel, one of which, about space greenhouses, was co-authored with an Austrian space architect and members of the German Space Agency. She closely follows the popular discourse around astronautics and astronomy and is passionate about connecting topics like space travel, cybernetics, astrobiology, and extraterrestrial messaging with the embodied experience of living on Earth. In 2018, she was awarded a utility patent for an integral storage container comprising concentrically arranged spheres that collapse micro and macro models of atoms and solar systems. More can be found on her website, cpworks.org. |
