Club President 2018-2019

Welcome to the Rotary Club of Vancouver Yaletown.

This is a very exciting year for our club as we are celebrating our 10th Anniversary.  This milestone allows us to take a look back at some of our incredible achievements, and as well look forward to our future.

In 2006, spearheaded by Carlos Esquivel, a group of people began meeting to establish a new club in the Vancouver Yaletown area, which would have a different meeting format.  Prospective members were attracted to the convenient meeting time, and one which fit peoples schedules.  Many of us found it difficult to make a traditional breakfast, lunch or dinner style meeting, so we created an after work club; one which maintains the opportunity to meet to learn from guest speakers, discuss and plan our service projects and club business, and to establish connections within Rotary, local businesses and community groups.  We were fortunate to be able to use the Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) Vancouver Campus as a meeting location.  FDU coincidentally has a longstanding connection with Rotary.  Its founders were Rotarians, one its former Board members was a President of Rotary International, and the university was even featured in an article of the Rotarian in the 1950’s!

While a relatively small club we have been a very active and engaged club.  In addition to our traditional meetings and guest speaker program, we also have club social and fellowship events, join other Rotary clubs, events and projects and engage in a variety of projects to serve our community locally and internationally. These have included
  • Sponsorship of Engines for El Salvador – sending a shipment of a fire engine and fire safety equipement to support community firefighting needs in another country
  • Seymour Pumpkin Patch – annual sponsorship of a Halloween event for an innercity school in Vancouver
  • Seymour Literacy Project -  sponsorship of a local reading program for an innercity school in Vancouver
  • Yaletown Movie Night – Supporting a community Senior’s centre
  • Candytown – Annual involvement in a local winter season community event in Yaletown
  • Community Garden Project – Sponsorship of developing a community garden in Vancouver
  • Amarok Literacy Project – sponsorship of material for a reading project
  • Yaletown Rotaract – establishing and sponsoring a local Rotaract club
These are just a small sample of they way our club and its members have helped to create a better communities locally, and globally.  It was fitting that in 2016, that we were recognized as the District 5040 Club of the Year.

Looking forward, this is a very exciting year for our club.  We will be proceeding with a major international project in Kenya.  Our club is sponsoring the construction of a Rainwater Harvesting System for a community school in rural Kenya.  This will provide a sustainable water supply, which in turn will help to address many health, sanitation and educational issues.

I want to wish everyone great year as we continue to help our local and global communities, while having a lot of fun and meeting some great people along the way.

Have you been looking for an opportunity to get involved and do great things in your community and in the world?  Are you interested in having an opportunity to learn about Are you interested in meeting new people and making some great connections not just in the immediate community, but also in other communities across Canada, North America and globally?

I invite you to come out and meet us and find out more about the world of Rotary and how you can make a difference.
