Due to the time and efforts of the Rockaway Rotary Club and the generosity of club members, the staff and students from the Rockaway Borough Schools and Divine Mercy Academy, and Rockaway area residents, many needy families will be able to enjoy Thanksgiving dinner this year.  This past Saturday, in support of the Rockaway Food Closet, members of the Rockaway Rotary Club collected frozen turkeys, bags of groceries, and cash donations to help Rockaway families who are struggling to pay their bills and are unable to stretch their budgets far enough to purchase the traditional Thanksgiving items.  The ideal of ‘Service” is thriving in Rockaway Rotary and our Rockaway communities.  We thank all of the community members who contributed to our efforts to assist those less fortunate.

ROCKAWAY - The parking lot of the First Assembly of God Church filled with children in costume for the church’s annual Halloween Festival Friday, Oct. 31.

The festival has been held for about 15 years. One thing that was different this year was the involvement of the Rockaway Rotary Club.

In the past, the Rotary Club held its own Halloween parade in the center of town.

But due to budget problems, the Rotary Club teamed up with the First Assembly of God Church to focus primarily on the Halloween festival, which had previously been the destination of marchers in the Halloween Parade.

“It’s a great event because we’re giving back to the community, which is always the Rotary’s mission,” said Rotary Club President Janice Christensen, who dressed up as a witch and gave out popcorn and candy.

“For the kids, the festival gives them a safer alternative instead of trick-or-treating door to door,” she said.

Aside from the candy and popcorn, another church parking lot was used to set up multiple bouncy houses. Other attractions included face painting, slides, obstacle courses, and cupcakes. The local fire and police departments brought their vehicles for the kids to sit in and explore.

“This is a great outreach to the community and a safe haven for the kids to get candy,” said Mary Ann Fortner of Rockaway Borough, who works as a administrative assistant for the church.

Festival visitors couldn’t get enough of it.

“I like how people have things set up free of charge,” said former borough resident Michael Nedo, who came from Staten Island with his wife Lenore, one-year-old son Michael Jr., sister Heather, and five-year-old nephew P.J.

“It’s good for a lot of families because it has that small-town feel where you feel welcome. Everyone’s real nice and the kids love trick-or-treating and the bouncy houses,” said Nedo.

The festival continued late into the evening, but the holiday celebration didn’t end there. Kids and families returned to their neighborhoods to do more trick-or-treating.

Rockaway Rotary supports local food pantry

Rockaway Rotary Club President Janice Christensen, left, presents a check for $2,055 to Rockaway Food Closet Director Linda Kirby.

During the week of Sept. 29, the Rockaway Rotary Club donated more than $2,000 to the Rockaway Food Closet, an organization of local volunteers who help feed the hungry in Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township.

"The Rotary Club has made an ongoing commitment to helping fund the Rockaway Food Closet because we do not want any of our neighbors to go hungry," said Janice Christensen, president of the club.

"This donation will help feed the 130 families who depend on us every month," adds Linda Kirby, volunteer director of the food pantry. "Many people we see never thought they would end up needing our support. But due to job loss, underemployment, a death in the family or divorce, they find themselves coming up short in living expenses. As we all know, housing costs in Morris County are some of the highest in the nation."

Many people pick up food until they have recovered from a financial crisis. Others, such as single parents, the elderly on fixed incomes or disabled individuals, remain as long-term beneficiaries.

Twelve volunteers accept donations, stock shelves, bag donations and serve as drivers.

"Ours is a completely volunteer organization. No one is paid and 100 percent of all donations go to buying food for our neighbors," Kirby explained. "The Rockaway Food Closet was formed in 1984. The Rockaway Rotary Club has supported for us for many years, and we truly appreciate their help."

When the Food Closet first opened, many families required assistance. That number steadily increased to 90 families a month by 2007, and in 2008, when the economy took a swift downturn, the number increased to the 130 families a month that are helped today.

The Rockaway Rotary Club is the local chapter of Rotary International, a club dedicated to humanitarian service at the community level. The club meets every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at The Exchange, or for those unable to make a mid-day meeting, at the Assembly of God Church in Rockaway on Wednesdays at 7:30 a.m.

To learn more about the club, call Janice Christensen 973-586-0630 or email rockawayrotary@ optimum.net

While not affiliated with any religious organization, the Rockaway Food Closet is located in the First Presbyterian Church at 35 Church St. in Rockaway Borough. Anyone interested in making a donation or becoming a volunteer should call Linda Kirby at 973-627-1059.

The Rotary Bowling League is currently comprised of only six teams.  The current standings have all 6 teams very close in point count leading to the possibility of a lot of movement if one team takes all 7 points.  Theoretically, the 1st place team could move to last place in one session.  Our Rockaway bowlers are currently in 6th place.   All of our team members’ averages have been established.   Mary Berry subbed last Wednesday and Rockaway won five (5) points for the evening.

From idea to community asset: Rockaway Rotary spruces up Park Lake

by Nancy Dreyfus

The Neighbor News – September 24 & October 1, 2014

On Saturday, Sept. 13, more than 20 members of the Rockaway Rotary Club donned gloves and filled garbage bags with the trash surrounding the lake and grounds of Park Lake, a public park straddling the borders of Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township.

"So many people in the Rockaways enjoy Park Lake today that they may be unaware that this wonderful community asset has only been around for about 20 years," said Janice Christensen, club president. "Back in the 1990s, the Rockaway Rotary Club helped raise funds from various sources to build the Park Lake gazebo and to pave a walkway around the lake with benches and lamp lights."

The project required cooperation between the State Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), municipal governments in Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township, and the Rockaway Rotary Club.

"The gazebo, valued at $42,000 in 1990, was built with a combination of money raised by the Rotary, donated material and labor done at cost," Christensen said. Construction took three years.

After the gazebo was completed, the Rockaway Rotary Club spearheaded the continued development of the park with a paved walkway around the lake. Once more, the Rockaway Borough and Rockaway Township municipal governments came together with the state DEP to approve the project. The Rotary raised $6,000 and the municipal engineer donated design work.

Once approved, the municipal governments contributed a total of $50,000 and applied for a matching $50,000 grant from the state. An initial $6,000 investment by Rotary resulted in a $100,000 paved walkway.

"The next step in the project was installing benches around the lake," said Christensen. The towns agreed to install the benches if they were provided.

"Our club decided we would try to offer the benches as memorial benches," Christensen noted. "By word of mouth, alone, all 13 benches were underwritten by donors, and the towns installed $9,200 worth of benches."

The walkway became popular so quickly that residents expressed the wish that it be lit for use at night.

"The success of the memorial benches motivated the club to offer memorial lampposts," Christensen said. "They sold quickly, and 49 lampposts were installed around the circumference of the lake, making this beautiful community resource available day or night."

The lampposts represented another $40,000 in park improvements.

"The Rotary Club also provided $6,000 worth of playground equipment for the beach area," Christensen added. "So, this simple idea and seed money from the Rotary grew with the support of both municipal governments and private citizens to what you see today. In total, Park Lake improvements exceeded $200,000."

Today, the Park Lake gazebo is used for summer concerts, weddings, community picnics and family reunions. On any given day, year round, residents can be seen taking strolls around the lake, walking their dogs, skating, bicycling and exercising. Many admire the wildlife, watching swans, ducks and geese raise their young.

The Rockaway Rotary Club is the local chapter of Rotary International, a club dedicated to humanitarian service at the community level. The club is involved in supporting the Rockaway Food Pantry and maintaining Park Lake Gazebo, as well as running the Rockaway Halloween parade, Easter Bunny breakfast and annual donation of dictionaries for every third grader in Rockaway Township and Rockaway Borough.

To learn more about the club, contact Janice Christensen at 973-586-0630 or via email at rockawayrotary@optimum.net.
