Our special speaker at this meeting will be Hal Lesky with Toastmasters International, an educational organization promoting communications and public speaking skills. On Saturday, November 23rd, 9 a.m. - noon, Rockaway Rotarians will be holding their annual Turkey Food Drive in support of the Rockaway Food Closet. Frozen turkeys and non-perishable food items will be collected at Rockaway Assembly of God, 113 E. Main St., Rockaway Borough. We will be needing volunteers to help with the collection and this is a great way for us as Rotarians to demonstrate our own thankfulness for our blessings by helping others. At our Breakfast Meeting on October 2nd, Rockaway Rotarians prepared for our annual Dictionary Project by putting name plates in each of the over 300 dictionaries that will be distributed this month to very 3rd grader in Rockaway Borough and Township. As part of Rotary International, the Rotary Club of the Rockaways (NJ), is committed to doing its part to support education, one of the six causes of Rotary. If you are interested in helping distribute these dictionaries during the month of October, contact Bob Galenkamp.
Come out and join our community at the Dark Lake Spooktacular Halloween event on Saturday, October 26th, 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. The Rockaway Boro Recreation and the Rockaway Boro Education Foundation are teaming up to bring a free, fun-filled trick or treat event to the Park Lake walking path. Our club will participate by having a booth and giving out candy to the kids. We need volunteers and if you are interested in helping, please contact Ken Nickel or President Denise.
At our September 18th Lunch Meeting, Bob Zirele from Camp Merry Heart-Easter Seals, shared about the mission and many activities of the camp. Rockaway Rotary has supported Camp Merry Heart for many years including the building and maintenance of a gazebo at the camp.
On Sunday, September 15th, Rockaway Rotarians joined with the Rockaway community in the annual Celebrate Rockaway Day. The street festival held in the middle of Rockaway Borough is a time for folks to come together and enjoy various vendors, ride the train or horse-drawn carriage and meet some new neighbors. Rockaway Rotarians popped lots of popcorn and distributed it by the Rockaway Borough Police Department. Well done Rockaway Borough Business Owners Association on a great event.
At our September 4th Breakfast Meeting, the Rotary Club of the Rockaways was honored to have our District Governor Ray Freaney, District 7475, visit us and share his goals and plans for this Rotary year. DG Ray was introduced by Deputy Governor Steve Goldberg. DG Ray presented Club President Denise with the 2019-2020 Rotary Theme Banner and a certificate from Rotary International acknowledging the club's 75th anniversary. Also, the club received two people into membership. Welcome, Janice Christensen and Peter Turnamian.
