ROTARY SPOTLIGHT 

John Beeman, Major Donor 

John Henry Beeman, who  was awarded a Rotary Foundation Level 2 Major Donor Award at the January  29th Presidents' - Foundation Ball, was recognized for his support of the The  Rotary Foundation and its myriad of programs. 

 

John, who was born on May 8, 1917, Lower Berkshire Valley, Wharton, NJ, attended Roxbury High and graduated Valedictorian of the Class of 1935.  John graduated from Columbia University in 1939 and served Equitable Insurance for a year, before working at Picatinny Arsenal. John married and was Commissioned as an Ensign in the United States Navy two weeks prior to Pearl Harbor.  He served on a Landing Craft Tank (LCT) during the landings in Anzio and D-Day in France.  After 4 months, he was sent back to the US to prepare for the Pacific.  John was then promoted to Lt. JG.  In the Pacific Theater, he continued to serve on a LCT which involved more island landings.  Upon being discharged, he worked at several NY jobs including the Port of New York Authority.  He attended St. John's Law School, graduated in 3 years, and was admitted to the NY bar on December 25, 1950.  He then spent a few years working on his MBA & PhD at New York University.  John then worked in Maryland traveling around the world on business, only to return to Picatinny Arsenal where he retired in December2010.  As a Citizen of Rockaway Borough, he served 17 years on the Borough Planning Board; 15 Years on the Library Board; 7 years on the Board of Education of the Morris Hills Regional District; and 3 years on the Citizens' Advisory Council of the Morris County Planning Board. While an employee of Picatinny Arsenal, John received the Federal Executive Board's District Distinguished Public Service Award, 2000.  Most recently, John was the recipient of the Boy Scouts of America's Morris Life Time Achievement Award in 2010. 

As a Rotarian for the past 40 years, John maintained 40 years of perfect attendance; served as President of the Rockaway Rotary Club in 1973-1974;  served 5 years on the District Scholarship Committee; served 12 years as his Club's Bulletin Editor; honored three times by the Rockaway Rotary Club as a Paul Harris Fellow; recognized four times as the Rotarian of the Year; received the Rotary Foundation District Service Award in 2004; and received the Polio Eradication Award of District 7470 in 2005.  John was the organizer of both the Rotary Club of Wharton and the Rotary Club of Mt. Olive in 1976 -77. John was the individual who initiated both the Gazebo and Walkway at Park Lake, Rockaway in1985-1986. Due to John's exceptional involvement with Rotary and youth with special needs, NJ Easter Seals - Camp Merry Heart recognized John as an outstanding Rotarian.
