Misheelt Batjargal and her fellow club members are giving a voice to infants and toddlers in Mongolia who would otherwise live in a silent world.
As part of a large-scale community project, the Rotary Club of Ulaanbaatar Peace Avenue, Mongolia, is equipping hospitals with screening devices to test newborns’ hearing. Batjargal, an ear, nose, and throat physician, says screening to detect hearing loss is not routine nationwide in Mongolia. She estimates that more than 200 hundred children in the country lose their hearing each year.

When Marty Hatala, a member of the Rotary Club of Boaz, Alabama, first traveled to Ghana in 2010 to volunteer at a local orphanage, she saw how local communities struggled to find clean water.
Though at least 80 percent of the country's population has access to improved water sources, according to UNICEF, 5 million Ghanaians still use water from unsafe sources. That leaves a significant part of the country's population susceptible to a range of diseases. Worldwide, one out of every five deaths among those under the age of five is caused by water-related diseases.

It is with great regret and sorrow we pass on the sad news that Carin's father, Jan van Zyl died last week. Carin was contacted and set out immediately, but did not make it in time. President Stephan followed last Saturday. Stephan expects to be back for our September 16th meeting.
Jan van Zyl was a member of the Pretoria Rotary Club and a Past District Governor of district 9400.
Many of us were fortunate to meet this warm and caring man, both in South Africa and during his frequent visits to Alberta.
It was a very proud and emotional father who participated in the induction of his daughter, Carin, as our newest member here in July.
Jan van Zyl will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Our sincere condolences go out to Carin, her mother and her family.
Tymm and Carlo is spending quality time in Ontario this summer and will tour Europe for a year after that. Consequently she has resigned from the club with the intention of re-joining Rotary on her return to Canada.
We wish them both well in their endeavors and hope to hear from them on their return.
