Blighted schools in the mountain city of Peja in western Kosovo are a reminder of the ethnic strife and war that ravaged this area in the 1990s. To restore ruined sanitation facilities in some of those schools, local Rotary members recently partnered with their counterparts from Colorado, USA. Though residents have been slowly rebuilding the city's infrastructure after years of neglect under earlier governments, most resources are going to improve roads, rebuild homes, and create new businesses. Little money remains to restore the schools. As a result, students have fallen ill, stayed home...

Students from Israel and Palestine sat together at a local art studio in Encinitas, California, USA, one day last summer, drawing portraits of one another and learning how to live in peace. Kelly Mellos, an organizer of the project from the Rotary Club of Encinitas Coastal, says that drawing someone who is sitting so close helps break down social barriers between the young people. "They see how many similarities there are between them," she says. "And they begin to understand we are all just people. There is a respect and trust that builds." The students were participating in a program run by...

Rotary International released an additional $34.8 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, the three countries where the disease has never been stopped. The funds, whose release was announced 20 January, will be used by the World Health Organization and UNICEF for polio immunization and surveillance activities in the 10 countries, as well as to provide technical assistance in several other countries in Africa. The grants include $8.1 million for Nigeria to support its final push to eradicate the disease. Nigeria...

Using their talents, expertise, and leadership, Rotary members worldwide are asked to be gifts to the world this upcoming 2015-16 Rotary year. Rotary International President-elect K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran called Sunday's address to incoming district governors the "most significant moment of my life." "All of you have been given so many gifts. And you have now been given this great gift: one year to take all your talents, all your gifts, everything that you are and can become -- and Be a Gift to the World," said Ravindran, revealing his presidential theme at the annual five-day training meeting...

One might think a man living with polio in an iron lung would know about Rotary. But it wasn't until Paul Alexander had a business meeting with a member in Duncanville, Texas, earlier this year that he learned Rotary fights to eradicate the very disease that left him almost completely paralyzed. "I was completely blown away by the idea. For all these years, I didn't know the work they were doing," says Alexander, a practicing attorney in Dallas. "It's such a perfect fit for me." Alexander contracted polio during a major U.S. outbreak of the disease in the late 1950s when he was six years old...

Stories
Mike Onieu was born in Regina and has spent the last 20 years on tanks, under tanks and in tanks.
He and wife, Carolyn are parents to 2 children.
Mike has achieved his Masters Degree from King's College, London.

Returning from the Congo this past November, Mike has a new outlook on what qualifies as a "hardship".
Thanks for the human/ soldier view of the most challenging area, full of 90 Million souls.

Here is the link to Patrick Gibson's filming of the 28 minute presentation. (video can also be viewed from the club home page):

In 2002, the Strathconian was a monthly, mailed newsletter. Ken Hurshowy has recently given me old copies. I plan to run some of the stories again.
John Barnes was the Sgt. at Arms and a contributor. John was a wit. He wrote a monthly series on the Past Presidents of the club.
Here is the first one. We will follow each week with a page from 13 years ago.

I would say these pigs are on the lam; but it feels inappropriate.
It would be better to title this: "Treble Trotters Tread Turquoise Waters"

After  being married for 48 years, a wife asked her husband to describe  her.

He looked at her for a while, then said,  "you're  an alphabet wife... A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K."

She  asks,  "what  the hell does that mean?"

He said, “Adorable, Beautiful,  Cute,  Delightful,  Elegant, Fabulous, Gorgeous, and Hot".

She smiled happily  and said,  "oh  that's  so lovely, but what about I, J, K?"

He said, "
I'm J
ust  Kidding!"

It is that time of year again that I have a lot of deliveries. Valentines Day! So the offer stands if you would like to help the club by delivering flowers for February 12, 13 and 14. I pay $10.00 for each delivery and the money goes to our Rotary Club. I think this is a great fundraiser! If you are interested in driving any of these days, let me know. Last Mothers day we raised $1200.00 for the club in 2 days so that is not to bad.

Feel free to email me or call me at 780-988-8588 and let me know what you are available and I will schedule you in.

Yours in Rotary
Heather de Kok
"I hope I get flowers delivered by a Rotarian this Valentines!"

Our Rotary club's Kiva team continues to move our loan portfolio ahead.  To date we have made 143 loans and to date we have 21 loans that have been successfully paid back.

The average lender on Kiva has an outstanding loan portfolio of just $39.85 while we have a loan portfolio of $1962, the average lender on Kiva has a delinquency rate of 5.00% while we have a delinquency rate of just 1.61% and the average lender on Kiva experiences a default rate of 1.10% while we have a default rate of 0.00%.

Our Kive lending team now consists of 20 individual Kiva lenders, some are members of our Rotary club, some are members of other Rotary clubs and some are not Rotarians at all, this small group of committed lenders has now cumulatively made 415 loans totaling $11,525.

The ongoing good work by everyone involved in this positive, immediate solution helps us connect one on one with real people around the world.

Keep up the great work!
