Rotary is releasing $40.3 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, three countries where the disease has never been stopped. The funds will help build on gains Rotary and its partners have been making in the fight to eradicate polio. Nigeria hasn’t seen a polio case since 24 July and the World Health Organization could remove it from the list of polio-endemic countries as soon as September if no cases are reported. Nigeria would have to go another two years without a case to be certified polio-free. But the...

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Russian was the predominant second language offered in Polish schools, leaving tens of thousands of Polish emigrants without the English skills they needed.   That has changed over the last 25 years. English proficiency drastically improved after the government reformed its education system in 1991. The country overhauled its teaching curriculum and materials and introduced English as the primary foreign language. As of 2013, Poland ranks 8th in the world in English proficiency. However, one segment of the population isn’t reaping...

RI President-elect K.R. Ravindran introduced a member benefits program at the 9 June closing session of the 2015 Rotary International Convention, saying that many more hands are needed to continue Rotary’s work around the world. The program, Rotary Global Rewards, aims to boost membership and enhance member satisfaction. It will debut on 1 July. “This innovative new program will allow Rotary members to connect with hundreds of businesses and service providers from around the world -- and that number is growing,” said Ravindran. “These establishments will offer Rotarians discounts and...

Nigeria and the whole continent of Africa is on the cusp of being polio free, Dr. Hamid Jafari told audience members at the Rotary Convention on 8 June in São Paulo, Brazil. Between 2013 and 2014, the reported cases of polio dropped from 53 to just six in Nigeria. Even more encouraging, said Jafari, is that the last case of polio in Nigeria was reported in July of last year and the last case in all of Africa was reported in Somalia in August. “With a year of no polio cases in Nigeria tantalizingly close, and no cases in Somalia since August, the tireless work of so many people across the...

Rotary Strathcona Fun Golf a Great Success for the Nepal Shelterbox Program
The Rotary Fun Golf and Barbecue held June 16, 2015 was a great time for all the duffers and social crowd that made it out for a terrific day. The annual event didn't disappoint. Mother Nature provided a lovely day on the pitch and putt golf course until the last group got caught in a bit of rain. But that didn't dampen their enthusiasm as President Stephan and First Lady Carin led the group to the final hole and the lovely Kinsmen River Valley Place area. We had a nice round of golf, barbecue and social highlighted by Doug Mulholland's hole in one, the hotly contested putting contest (Eric and Nicolle Germain having a shoot out with Nicolle letting her Dad win for Fathers Day) , the classic golf bag auction with Bruce Flesher winning, the great team of Doug Mulholland and Joan Freeman being clipped by one stroke in the two person best ball golf tourney by rookie Rick Harcourt and Eric Germain's round of 55. The event was well supported and raised enough money to provide a Rotary Shelterbox for the families in need in the Nepal earthquake area. Many thanks to everyone who came out and made this a great day.

My name is Nathan – I’m a supporter of Amarok Society’s incredible work, so I’ve asked Gabriel for his help in reaching out to some of Amarok’s other supporters and advocates. He suggested you might be a good person to contact.

I believe the achievements of AS deserve wide recognition for their innovative work in empowering some of the poorest neighbourhoods in the world to overcome serious threats to world peace. Could you please sign my petition to the Nobel Committee and forward it to your friends and contacts?

The Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona distributed about 150 flags on poles to spectators honouring the fallen Const. Daniel Woodall in the funeral procession on Wednesday June 17, 2015.
President Stephan and Carin collected over 200 flags in their large trailer from our members and was parked close to Canada Place arranged by District Office Administrator, Rene Cavanagh.

Spectators were very appreciative of being offered to hold a flag at the curb side and all the flags were returned to the trailer.
Thanks to our members and other Rotarians from Metro Edmonton clubs for participating on a short notice.

This important club fund raising initiative needs your help! We currently generate close to $19,000 per year (less expenses) from our “Canadian Flag Program”. Your ideas about how to retain current clients and grow the business would be welcomed.

If all our “able bodied” members were to generate or continue to maintain a small  manageable customer base close to home, it would enable us to continue this program. Existing large customer client routes also  need to be maintained as best we can and your help would be appreciated for these accounts.

This Mill Woods Cul de Sac has 10 flags; and another 4 within 3 blocks!

Maintenance of existing physical  inventory is ongoing and new flags, poles & holders have been ordered. A reasonably accurate list of current clients has been produced. Your thoughts & offers of assistance, where needed, can be communicated via e-mail to our chairperson Dennis. email: freeman5@telus.net He is looking forward to hearing from you soon.
