To strengthen their 69-year-old partnership, leaders from Rotary and the United Nations met this month in New York City for Rotary Day at the United Nations. The two organizations began working together with the aim of maintaining peace after World War II. Today, the relationship has evolved to include humanitarian work in areas like gender equality, child and maternal health, and disease treatment and prevention. While the UN's Millennium Development Goals are set to expire in 2015, its leaders are preparing for an even more ambitious humanitarian agenda of eradicating extreme poverty by...

Rotary and its partners in the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) are approaching a significant milestone: the eradication of type 3 wild poliovirus. The last case of polio caused by the type 3 virus was reported in Yobe, Nigeria, on 10 November 2012. "We may have eradicated a second of three; that's a major milestone," said Dr. Stephen Cochi, a senior adviser at the Center for Global Health at the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, speaking to the BBC. Rotary has played an important role in bringing type 3 polio close to extinction. PolioPlus grants have provided key...

More than 23,000 viewers in 24 countries tuned in to Rotary's World Polio Day event, streamed live on 24 October. Health officials including James Alexander, senior medical epidemiologist for the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, gave an update on the polio eradication campaign and praised Rotary's achievements to date. Rotary has contributed more than $1.2 billion to polio eradication since 1979. For World Polio Day, Rotary released $44.7 million in grants to fight the disease in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. In addition to the update, the event included entertainment by...

Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager shot in the head for speaking out against the Taliban in support of girls' education, has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for 2014. Yousafzai, whose father is a Rotarian, shares the prize with Kailash Satyarthi, a native of India who has worked to combat the exploitation of children for financial gain, according to an announcement in October from the Norwegian Nobel Committee. In announcing the award, the committee praised Yousafzai for demonstrating that "children and young people, too, can contribute to improving their own situations." It noted...

Business owners and community leaders in Evanston, Illinois, USA, joined Rotary staff and family members in a celebration of the organization's cultural diversity at an open-house Rotary Day event at Rotary's world headquarters on 25 October. Rotary President Gary C.K. Huang is urging clubs and districts to hold these informal events to showcase Rotary's good work. The open house was held immediately after Evanston's Day of Caring, during which volunteers planted trees, fixed up buildings, performed yard work, painted, and participated in other community projects throughout the city. Stories

President Stephanus Jansen van Vuuren addresses the club during the AGM.

A terrific AGM this week told the story of our accomplishments to date, this year and outlined the expectations for the rest of the year and beyond.

Just two of the highlights are as follows:

40% of our aid this year will be directed towards Youth Empowerment Support Society.

We will get to know them better and address definite needs with well intended hands-on and financial commitment to YESS.

Also, we should start thinking of creating a (New Years 2016?) Gala evening and event as a fun, fund raiser.

As the committee reports concluded, Past President Rose Marie Basaraba introduced the 2015-16 executive, including Ed Bourassa as President Nominee (2017-18), planned to follow Harald Kuckertz (2015-16), and Dimitri Papanocolas (2016-17).

A Proper Welcome to the new executive

This morning I joined Rotarians, Rotaractors and Interactors in San Juan de la Maguana in a visit into the nearby mountains to plant 1000 trees.

District 4060 (Dominican Republic) is elebrating the 110th anniversary by planting 110,000 trees across the country.

After a long hike we arrived at the very steep area where the trees were planted in record time.

Dear Fellow Rotarians,

We have scheduled our Tuesday December 2, 2014 lunch meeting as a “Prospective Rotary Club Members Lunch”.

We are encouraging all of our club members to invite anyone they think would enjoy being an active member of our Rotary Club to attend.

Do you have friends, professional colleagues and customers, family members, or other members in our community who you think would like to be part of our Rotary Club?

We have attached an invitation letter that you can forward to your contacts for their consideration in a recent email.  OPEN HERE

This would be a complimentary lunch for all prospective members.
We will have select group of our Rotary Club and District members highlight why they joined Rotary and are active Rotarians today.

Please extend the Rotary hand of friendship to someone you know and invite them to join us for our Tuesday December 2 lunch meeting.

Yours in Rotary,

Eric Germain

Terry Sveinson thanks us for our support while he tries to lose his dizziness infliction that has prevented him from attending meetings for the past few months. He thinks that improvements are on the way, but meanwhile, he is understandably sick and tired of being sick and tired.

We all wish a speedy recovery Terry; and we hope to see you back soon!yes

The German Canadian Cultural Association (GCCA) is closed the last two Tuesdays in December, Dec 23 & 30.
With the able help from Ron Dobbin, the super chef, Rick, at Allen Gray, has gracefully opened the doors for us to the 'Pub', which is adjacent to the dining room.
This was the room that was the focus of Ron's dissertation a couple of weeks ago.

In the spirit of the holidays, a glass of wine or a beer will be included in the usual $21 meal cost at the door.
Below is a map to Allen Gray.

Get ready to feel the Rotary love as we will hear heart warming stories of Rotary help around the world.

Our club KIVA team has recently passed a milestone or two. Patrick Gibson advised us that we have now been active with 100 (!) small loans to small businesses amounting to $8,800. in this, our first year of involvement. 100% of the 100 loans have either been paid back in full or are in the process of being paid back.
55% of loans have helped women, often with university tuition. Men and small agriculture based loans seem popular choices also.
Good work by everyone involved in this positive, immediate solution that helps us connect with real people around the world.
