More than 20,000 new cases of cancer are diagnosed every year in Sri Lanka, and many of them prove fatal. The Rotary Club of Colombo, Sri Lanka, set out 10 years ago to save some of those lives by establishing the Cancer Prevention and Early Detection Centre.

Rotary is releasing $40.3 million in grants to support polio immunization activities in 10 countries, including Afghanistan, Nigeria, and Pakistan, three countries where the disease has never been stopped.
The funds will help build on gains Rotary and its partners have been making in the fight to eradicate polio. Nigeria hasn’t seen a polio case since 24 July and the World Health Organization could remove it from the list of polio-endemic countries as soon as September if no cases are reported. Nigeria would have to go another two years without a case to be certified polio-free.

Before the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, Russian was the predominant second language offered in Polish schools, leaving tens of thousands of Polish emigrants without the English skills they needed.

The Presidential Citation Award was received by (now Past) President Steph as our club met and exceeded every challenge thrown our way by the International President at the beginning of "Light Up The World With Rotary" year.
Rotarian of the Year was named. Patrick Gibson, well deserved for his extra dedication to International projects, especially introducing us to KIVA and their online micro financing system.

YESS volunteers will be onsite this year at the Beverage Oasis! We will be serving Jones Soda and Oasis Smoothies to thirsty festival guests for the full ten days of the festival (July 16 - July 25).
YESS gets paid an honorarium based on volunteer hours at the Beverage Oasis (not the Charity Tent), so let’s fill as many spots as we can!! This is great for team building, and great fun to bring friends along to help out!!

Volunteers needed: 8 per shift (4 volunteers to be placed at each of the 2 serving tents)
Duties: Serving Jones Soda and Oasis Smoothies

4:00pm - 8:00pm
7:30pm - 11:30pm
Charity Booth
Volunteers needed: 4
Duties: Provide information about YESS, encourage guests to come to booth (there will be face painting, games, raffles/draw for a prize, etc – details TBD!!)

Ben Oosterveld (local realtor for Re/Max Elite) & Team Oosterveld is looking for help dropping off Canada Day flags in the Sherwood Park area. They plan to go out at midnight on Tuesday June 30, 2015 and drop off the flags with flyers to properties in those areas. This way the property owners wake up on Canada Day morning and find Canadian flags on their lawns. They have run this campaign before and it has rendered positive results for Ben's team and community members even inquire about when their flags might show up!
