For the past several years Rotarian Jim Greenough (RC of Edmonton) and I (Jeff Polovik, RC of Edmonton Sunrise) have been working to help Rotary re-engage with Fort Edmonton Park. We have personally spoken to a number of the Rotary Clubs in the Edmonton area and shared the vision of a project that we can support which would provide a lasting legacy of the role that Rotarians played in the formation and building of the park. Thanks to many of the Clubs and Rotarians who helped us by providing thousands of dollars to get this initiative moving. We are co-hosting a FUNd raising event at Fort Edmonton Park on the 15th of June, 2017. We have obtained a full complement of sponsors who share the vision of Fort Edmonton and we have sold over 30 tables to event already. We believe this will be a significant fundraiser and are excited to host this event. Our objective is to create something quite different than the “usual” auction. We obviously want to raise funds but also entertain and share with you the exciting plans for the new expansion happening over the next 3 to 4 years. There will be no silent auction and only a few interesting live auction items. We have arranged for opening and closing entertainment that will leave you wanting more. One of the major hurdles in moving this project forward over the last many years has been the lack of government funding. We are pleased to advise that all three levels of government have committed over 150 million dollars to the expansion of Fort Edmonton Park. The final hurdle is to secure the last 10 million dollars which is required to complete the entire expansion. At the May 25 board meeting, the board approved a contribution to cover one table at the event desribed below. The contribution is in support of adding the Albion and and Windsor blocks to reaffirm Rotary's history and presence in Fort Edmonton. President Dimitri will announce how members can directly participate in the exciting event. |

Okay, fencesitters, procrastinators, TIME's UP!
We HAVE to get the numbers up to show our appreciation to the Kerr's for their generosity and determination to help the club raise unrestricted funds for a very worthy cause -- Kiva Micro Finance.
Every single penny collected from registrations, special premium liquor tasting, donations and contributions is earmarked for Kiva.
This year the Kerr's are graciously opening their door and their hearts again in hosting The All Things 60's Party.
The date is Saturday, August 12, 2017 from 5:00 pm (1700) till 10:00 pm (2200).
Like last year, the Kerr's are putting on the whole show by providing food, entertainment and beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic).
Skip is donating three premium bottles, e.g. 27 year old Scotch, Masterpiece Bourbon, Platinum Tequila. Heather has provided a sign-up sheet where you can pre order and pay her in advance. Open the file in the EVENT left column (Event Attachments).
All revenue from ticket sales and funds raised will be destined to Kiva Micro Finance, with emphasis on borrowers in Ecuador and Columbia as suggested by the Kerr's.
After July 15
The ticket price is $60/ea

Invitation to Participate August 21-25, 2017 on Treaty Six Territory at Grant MacEwan University
Ignite Change is a global gathering for human rights defenders, protectors, promoters, facilitators… those with a concern about the current human rights climate we live within and are working to build peace and take action globally and locally.
Participants will examine how to address four key issues from a human rights lens: human trafficking, arms, drugs and hate. Global citizens need to amplify voices and perspectives on these issues and translate concerns into non-violent direct action.
Whether you are curious about human rights and need some direction or inspiration, an active human rights defender, or one with knowledge and experience to share, this gathering will provide an opportunity to network and build a deepened collective impact.
We are inviting all Rotary Clubs in the districts to sponsor an international student or delegate to attend this Global Gathering.
Outcomes of the conference will include a report of public policy recommendations on the issues at hand and a documentation of stories and ideas.

The following is a message and invitation from PDG Judy Harcourt-Brown and Ron Brown: Some of you might recall that I spoke at your club about Casa Hogar Los Angelitos (CHLA) orphanage that Ron and I are involved with in Manzanillo Mexico. It is a very special and different kind of children's home than typical orphanages in Mexico and other developing or third world countries. It was founded 22 years ago by Rotarian Nancy Nystrom. It currently has 81 children, and is funded totally by donations - no government assistance. The mission of CHLA and the methods used are designed to help each child Thrive, not just survive. And to break the cycle of poverty by giving hope, love, care and the tools that lead to success for children who have come from desperate and hopeless situations.
Their expressive arts program includes dance. The children begin at an early age to learn and perform Folkloric Mexican Dance, and their troupe is now known all across Mexico, some US states, and Alberta. They performed in Edmonton in July 2014 to a sold out crowd, and will be coming here again this month. They will be performing at Festival Place in Sherwood Park on Wednesday, September 20th, 7:00 pm, and at the MacLab Centre for Performing Arts in Leduc on Thursday, September 21st. Tickets are only $25.00. Everyone who attended the last time was blown away by the professionalism of these young people. You can order tickets directly from the venues.
Ron and I hope that you will join us.

Oct. 24, 2017 12:15 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
The life blood of our Rotary Club and Rotary International heading into the future is the successful recruitment and retention of new Rotary Club members. As time marches on, it is imperative that we are all actively identifying prospective new Rotary Club members, and inviting them out to our weekly club meetings. Our club has been very successful in recruiting and retaining new club members over the last several years.
Part of our recruiting initiative over the last couple of years, has been to have special lunch meetings devoted to inviting prospective new members to introduce them to our club, and to provide some insight into the benefits of joining Rotary. We have been holding these traditionally in the spring and the fall, with good results.
We are excited to announce our next Prospective New Members luncheon will be held at our regular meeting on Tuesday October 24, 2017.
We will be highlighting the great work that our Rotary club has been doing locally and internationally. We think this would be a great way to introduce prospective new members to Rotary.
I encourage all of our active Rotary Club members to invite a friend, colleague, family member or just someone you may know who would appreciate Rotary. The lunch cost for any prospective member will be picked up by our Rotary Club.
In fact, we would like to extend our offer of a free lunch to any prospective member for any regular Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona lunch meeting, until further notice, to encourage the attendance of prospective new members throughout the year. We have attached an invitation letter for you to send out to anyone who may be interested in Rotary.
Please RSVP to myself directly with the names of any prospective members who will be joining us for our lunch meeting by Thursday October 19 2017.
Warmest Rotary Regards,
Eric
