Dividends from Addressing Climate Change
May 15, 2018
Henry Jakubowski received a BS in Chemistry after spending several years as an Astronomy/Physics major. Following his undergraduate degree, he developed clinical diagnostic tests at the Mayo Clinic for four years before pursuing a Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Iowa. He returned to Mayo for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Biophysics before taking a faculty position in the Chemistry Department at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, where he has taught for 30 years. He is also a visiting Professor of Chemistry at Southwest University, Beibei, Chongqing, China as a result of his teaching there and work developing a student research collaboration between the two universities. In recent years he has increasingly realized the impact of climate change on the world we are leaving for our children and grandchildren and has felt he has not done enough to bring the science of climate change to his students and to the general public. The urgency of this issue has led him to develop programs and give talks on climate change and present solutions which offer hope for future generations. |

An Open Invitation To End Domestic Violence
Aug. 14, 2018 12:00 p.m.
Startling statistic about domestic violence: Every 9 seconds a women is a victim of domestic violence; and in Minnesota, one in every three homeless women was homeless due to domestic violence (2003 stat). Anna Marie’s Alliance incorporates innovative practices to address this ongoing public health concern that continues to impact families in Central MN. In addition to recent initiatives such as trauma informed care and a pet safe home, Anna Marie’s Alliance has embarked on it’s Building Hope Campaign. This campaign will enhance Anna Marie’s Alliances ability to engage with the community through the Center for Family Peace; a new 7,000 sq ft facility that will house prevention and education programming as well as it’s non-residential community advocacy services. A second major outcome of the campaign will be transforming the current emergency shelter from dormitory style living space to apartment style living space. This significant change will allow more privacy for people that have experienced considerable trauma and more autonomy for families that are in transition to a new life.
Charles Hempeck, executive director, will share how these changes will have a positive effect on people directly impacted by domestic violence and on the community as a whole. |
