Dividends from Addressing Climate Change

Henry Jakubowski received a BS in Chemistry after spending several years as an Astronomy/Physics major.  Following his undergraduate degree, he developed clinical diagnostic tests at the Mayo Clinic for four years before pursuing a Ph.D in Biochemistry at the University of Iowa.  He returned to Mayo for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship in Biophysics before taking a faculty position in the Chemistry Department at the College of St. Benedict/St. John’s University, where he has taught for 30 years. He is also a visiting Professor of Chemistry at Southwest University, Beibei, Chongqing, China as a result of his teaching there and work developing a student research collaboration between the two universities.

In recent years he has increasingly realized the impact of climate change on the world we are leaving for our children and grandchildren and has felt he has not done enough to bring the science of climate change to his students and to the general public. The urgency of this issue has led him to develop programs and give talks on climate change and present solutions which offer hope for future generations.

The Soils of Stearns County

Stearns County is home to a highly diverse landscape of soils. We will explore some of the history of how the soils across our county were formed and what type of characteristics they have. Even more interesting is the history of how early settlers of Stearns County have interacted with those soils through various agricultural practices. This talk will bring together the topics of Stearns County soils and how humans have interacted with these soils across our diverse landscape.

Dr. Joe Storlien is a native of Dawson, MN. He received his B.S. and M.S. from St. Cloud State University and his Ph.D. in Soil Science from Texas A&M University. He is currently an Assistant Professor of Environmental Studies at St. John’s University and a U of MN Extension Master Gardener.
