Crisis in NicaraguaAt our meeting on July 12, Jim Kite gave us an update on the situation on Nicaragua where the country is in crisis. As a result of years of corrupt practices by president Ortega, he has angered the elderly, the students, the business community and even his own party. over 300 people have been murdered during peaceful protests by Ortega's men. As a result, the whole country's roads have been blocked off and no trucks or shipping can bring supplies into the country. Some supplies can be flown in, but can't be distributed because all major highways are blockaded. As a result people can't get medical treatment and many who already live hand-to-mouth are starving.Jim says that we can help by sending money that can be wired-in so that basic foods can be purchased from local farmers within the country and distributed through back roads in small pickups, off of the main highways to people who need it. This can be done through the 501C3 organization Hope and Relief International that Jim and other Rotarians set up several years ago to help build schools and hospitals in Nicaragus. If Rotarians Want to help they can send money to Jim payable to HOPE AND RELIEF INTERNATIONAL FOUNDATION 10700 Gerke Rd, Brenham, TX 77833. BITS AND PIECES
LONG STORY SHORT – “WHAT’S ROTARY” You’re in an elevator with a colleague who turns to you and asks, “What’s Rotary?” With less than a minute to answer, what do you say?
From Anne L. Matthews, Rotary Foundation Trustee, USA: Rotary is the most prestigious nonpolitical, nonsectarian service organization in the world. It’s a little over 100 years old. Our purpose as Rotarians is to promote peace and understanding through a wide array of educational and humanitarian programs under the auspices of the Rotary Foundation. The heart and soul of the Foundation is to help people who are less fortunate all over the world.
From Dong Kurn Lee, Rotary Foundation Trustee, Korea: Rotary gives you the opportunity to build relationships, but more important, it gives you the opportunity to contribute to society. Rotary means the chance to help those who are less privileged. Weekly meetings allow you to meet with friends, to think about others, and to make donations. Everyone needs this.
From Kalyan Banerjee, RI President-Elect, India: Rotary is a volunteer organization with 1.2 million business and professional leaders from around the world who get together in friendship, provide humanitarian service, and work for peace. They conduct projects to address challenges such as illiteracy, disease, hunger, poverty, lack of clean water, and environmental concerns. One of the cornerstones of Rotary is our firm belief in maintaining high ethical standards in our business, professional, and personal lives.

A personal Note to Members
Our Demolition Derby is unique for bringing the community together -- we get such a wide assortment of humanity that would not otherwise come together. I often hear comments of amazement about our diverse crowds in the stands, and how well everyone gets along. Much like a football game, there is common ground for camaraderie during the event, regardless of a person’s walk of life. The community’s involvement is also demonstrated by the multitude of volunteers who work at Derby. Of the 156 workers onsite this year, far less than half were Rotarians! This shows a huge commitment to our event from the larger community, making our club a conduit for the community’s spirit of service. Although our Bike Ride doesn’t require as many non-Rotarian workers, our whole community benefits from this event. The County is visited by thousands of Houstonians who are likely to come back and spend their money here. At both events, Washington County is “on stage” to visitors, displaying its physical amenities and its warm, friendly atmosphere. At each event, we get many comments about our welcoming hospitality and our well-organized management – people are impressed and delighted with what we do! Attendees and non-Rotarian volunteers keep coming back because they believe in us, and they want to be part of it all. From a more personal perspective, I always leave our events feeling newly connected to fellow Rotarians. Our club is great because we work so well as a team, and our events give us opportunities to bond and become even stronger as a positive community force. For all these reasons, I’m very proud to be part of this club. We are accomplishing great things together. It may not be apparent when we sit in meetings each week, but we are making a difference in Washington County! In Rotary service, Sharon Brass

Nicaragua TripThe School of the Dump in Chinandega, Nicaragua is supported by Rotarians. Jim Kite of the Brenham Rotary Club heads up the Hope and Relief International Foundation; a nonprofit organization formed to assist in building and maintaining schools and housing for the people of Nicaragua. Several villages have been built with the guidance and assistance of Rotarian volunteers. The "School of the Dump" gives children who live around the city dump in Chinandenga a chance by feeding and educating them. Several children who once were scavengers looking for something to eat in the dump are now College graduates or attending college as a direct consequence of the kindness of strangers.
Jim will be taking a group to Nicaragua on July 31, 2013 and returning 7 days later on August 6, 2013. If you would be interested in going along, Information about the trip including itinerary, and registration forms are available here. This can be a life changing trip, and I would encourage any Rotarian to take it. Links for INFORMATION ITINERARY SIGN-UP |

RISING TO THE CHALLENGE
The end of this month (June 2012) marks the close of Rotary’s Challenge for polio eradication. Through the hard work of Rotarians around the globe, the Rotary Foundation has raised over $200 million, six months ahead of schedule, in response to $355 million in grants from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. And this was accomplished during the worst global economy in years. This is Rotary’s third major fundraising campaign for polio eradication; the previous two campaigns were in 1985 and 2003. The fundraising goals were met and surpassed in those campaigns, but donations to the Foundation’s Annual Fund decreased. This time donations to the Foundation’s Annual Fund increased during the challenge, and we were able to raise this additional money for polio at the same time. This was achieved in part due to getting the community involved – Rotarians working with local leaders, holding pancake sales, swima-thons, bike rides – you name it, it’s been tried. Per Rotary Foundation Trustee, John Germ, chair of Rotary’s $200 Million Challenge Committee, “We could not have done this without the tremendous support of individual Rotarians around the world”. Now that we’ve reached this milestone, we need to build on our success by promoting the final push to end polio and continuing to raise funds until the world is certified polio-free. -excerpt from article in the June 2012 edition of “The Rotarian”

THE OBJECT OF ROTARYThe
Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of
worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster: FIRST. The development of acquaintance as an
opportunity for service; SECOND. High ethical standards in business and
professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations, and
the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve
society; THIRD. The application of the ideal of service in
each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life; FOURTH. The advancement of international
understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and
professional persons united in the ideal of service. Which leads to the Four-Way Test of the things we think, say or do:
IS IT THE TRUTH?
IS IT FAIR TO ALL CONCERNED?
WILL IT BUILD GOODWILL AND BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL TO ALL CONCERNED? |
