Sharpstown Rotary Club
Service In Action

Locally, and through the local Rotary District, many service programs offer our club the opportunity for participation. We directly support the following services and charitable events:

INDIA CHECK DAMS to retain water in the dry season and allow people to remain at home and grow their own crops rather than work in other areas away from their families.

SUPPORT OF U.S. VETS Midtown facility for homeless veterans in conjunction with Rolling Thunder and the City of Houston. See info on the 2008 "Spend A Day With A Vet" event.

ALL GIRLS BASKETBALL CLASSIC for city-wide High School Girls held in November each year. Get. more details on the All Girls Basketball Tournament.

DRUG AWARENESS ESSAY PROGRAM for Middle School students to help save a child from participation in drugs.

SOUTHWEST MINISTRIES School Supply Drive and Holiday Food/Toy Drive for needy families.

MENTORING of at-risk students in the Sharpstown area High Schools through Mentors of Hope.

SCHOLARSHIPS provided by the club each year to from 3 to 6 students who have a true need to enable them to pursue a higher education. The Basketball Classic allows us to fund at least two scholarships awarded to students of the participating schools. Two or more scholarships are awarded to students attending area vocational schools to encourage their continued education.

In 2009-2010 (July through June) the club supported the following:

$ 1,000 – Star of Hope Mission (with member support)
$ 700 – Ed White Elementary School
$ 500 – Fun Football at Bayland Park
$ 500 – Mentors of Hope, Lee High School
$ 500 – YES Prep
$ 151 – Aztec Boxing Club
