Rotary’s Motto is “Service above Self.”  These words can change your life - they make a difference in the world every day.  The great Winston Churchill once said “We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.”  When we give of ourselves in service and helping others, our lives are enriched and empowered in return.

The 5 avenues of Service in Rotary are (1) Club Service, (2) Vocational Service, (3) Community Service, (4) International Service and (5) New Generations Service.  Club Service can be rewarding and it helps to sustain an individual Rotary Club.  However, the four other avenues of service can provide some of the most gratifying and fulfilling experiences.

This year’s theme for Rotary International is “Peace through Service.”  These are not hollow words – peace initiatives are nothing new in Rotary.  A wonderful example of “Peace through Service” preceded this year’s theme.  Violence is ongoing in so many of the countries in the Mideast.  When it became time to do the vaccinations for Polio Plus, the violence was halted so that Rotarians could come in and issue the Polio vaccine during a truce.
