Since 2006, in response to having some of the lowest child immunization rates in the city, the SBFDC pulled together community partners to begin a Back-to-School Health Fair focused on providing children the immunizations needed to attend school. Early instrumental partners included Memorial-Spring Branch Rotary, along with nurses and police from Spring Branch ISD, church and community volunteers, the City of Houston District A, Houston Police Department, and the on-site SBFDC partners.
Each year, on average, this collaboration enables 800+ children to receive their immunizations for school, along with providing access to adult health screenings, a community organization health fair with 40 vendors, 2000+ backpacks with school supplies, and most recently, free dental sealants through the City of Houston Bureau of Oral Health.
The Health Fair would not be possible without the collaboration of many community partners. Over the past 11 years, the SBFDC has helped deliver $3M+ worth of services to 50,000+ people, providing 5,500+ immunizations, distributing 27,000+ backpacks with school supplies, and involving 300 volunteers each year.
In 2018, 1500 children received immunization services in four hours!
