President Stephen Monsen (in the red shirt) and Richard Gruen (right) present a check for $1500 to Don Sweat with Today's Harbor for Children.  For years, Richard has been involved in this work and has had the support of our club.  Children who might not have the advantages of a safe place to live and be nurtured are given a "step up" by this good organization.  Our Rotary club cares!

Each year, through our club Foundation, we award scholarships to local students from The Heights.  These scholarships help these fine young people to go forward with their education and become valuable members of our community.  Shown here are Tony Allman, our club scholarship director, and three of the young people from Heights High as well as their sponsor.

Each year, the Rotary Club of Houston Heights donates bicycles to kids who have had perfect attendance at their elementary school.  Gary Miller took this photo of kids at Love Elementary.  Scott Thompson made sure the kids at Helms  Elementary got their bikes, and Dave Mase did the same at Harvard Elementary.  Congratulations to these great kids!

Norman Adams with Adams Insurance Services in the Heights was the lucky winner in our fundraiser raffle event last month.  He walked away with a check for $7500!  And guess what??? Being the kind of good fellow and supporter of the Rotary Club of Houston Heights that he is, Norman donated the check back to our club with his good wishes.  Norman is an example of one of our Rotary mottos..."He profits most who serves the best."  Thank you Norman! (shown here is Norman on the left with club member Scott Lester)

Our Global Grant to Ghana has been approved!  Our club contributed $1000 toward this grant, along with other clubs in District 5890 to bring needed agricultural benefits to this region...here is a little bit of information about the nature of the grant:

The goal of this two-year project is to increase economic prosperity and build resilient pro-poor communities around Mole National Park. This objective is pursued by diversifying the local economy and reducing dependency on limited land resources, while creating opportunities for people to be included as suppliers, managers, and owners of economic infrastructure. The project seeks to employ strategies that enhance existing social, natural, human, and financial capital in an environment where distance to markets makes all the difference in livelihood strategy decisions.

The Heights Rotary participated in an international project with eight other area Clubs to build four classrooms at the Cheheltan Middle School in Kabul, Afghanistan.  Before the classrooms were built, students were holding classes outside in the sun and under tents.  Girls in the morning and boys in the afternoon.  The project, started by the Humble Intercontinental Club, raised over $10,000 to build and furnish the classrooms.  The project was completed in October, 2012.

Check out the Photo Gallery to see pictures of the project, especially the girl holding the Heights Rotary banner.
