Other News:
At the Board's March meeting a report on the result of the Club members' vote on the Area 4 Habitat for Humanity 2021 Project indicated a clear majority of club members voted to support the project.

All London Rotary clubs have agreed to provide support.  The clubs will commit to donate $25,000 to the Habitat for Humanity project by December 31, 2021.  Current pledges total $16,000, so the clubs will need to raise an additional $9,000 for the project.

Suggested Community Projects Looking for Immediate Support
As rapidly as things are unfolding, many in our community are being impacted – by changing employment conditions, the impact of self-isolation and other chronic needs.

There are 2 local organizations we can  help, the London Food Bank or Meals on Wheels.  It has been suggested we consider donating the cost of our cancelled weekly meetings and the Sports Celebrity Dinner tickets to one or both of these charities.

While we could do that through the Rotary Club of London Foundation, it would be more efficient to send donations directly to the Food Bank or Meals on Wheels since there is an urgent need for funds.  As registered charities, they would issue tax receipts for the donations.

Stay tuned for further updates.

April is Maternal and Child Health Month
Maternal and Child Health Care, is one of Rotary’s Six Areas of Focus. Every day mothers risk their lives giving birth and millions of children die each year from treatable, preventable causes. Rotarians improve access to essential medical services for mothers and their children. These efforts are aimed at reducing the number of children under age five who die each year because of malnutrition, inadequate health care, and poor sanitation – a figure that is currently estimated at 7 million.

According to another estimate, more than 80 percent of maternal deaths can be prevented with access to reproductive health services and trained health care workers. Rotarians provide education, immunizations, birthing kits, and mobile health clinics to support these causes. Women are taught how to prevent mother-to-infant HIV transmission, how to breast-feed, and how to protect themselves and their children from disease.

World Immunization Week – 24 to 30 April
Immunization saves millions of lives every year and is widely recognized as one of the world’s most successful and cost-effective health interventions. Yet, there are still nearly 20 million children in the world today who are not getting the vaccines they need.

The theme this year is #VaccinesWork for All and the main goal of the campaign is to urge greater engagement around immunization globally and the importance of vaccination in improving health and wellbeing of everyone, everywhere throughout life.

As part of the 2020 campaign, WHO and partners, including Rotary, aim to:
* Demonstrate the value of vaccines for the health of children, communities and the world.
*Show how routine immunization is the foundation for strong, resilient health systems and universal health coverage.
*Highlight the need to build on immunization progress while addressing gaps, including through increased investment in vaccines and immunization.

Rotary knows firsthand that #VaccinesWork. We’ve contributed more than $1.9 billion and countless volunteer hours to protect more than 2.5 billion children from polio.
