Our Monday 10 February Programme:
On Monday 10 February our speaker will be Cheryl Finn, General Manager of Tourism London. Cheryl moved to London Ontario in 1993 from Northern Ontario and quickly became involved in the community sport movement.  She was the Executive Director of the London Sports Council where she was successful in building on a strong business model and implemented many new and innovative ideas. This, thereafter, enhanced the grass roots sport community in London forever.

Cheryl has been fortunate enough to have been a volunteer on numerous local Host Organizing Committees.

Cheryl currently serves as Past - Chair of the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance, after having served as Chair since 2015 and as a member of the Board of Directors since 2013.

Cheryl is completing her MSc. In Tourism and Hospitality Management through Guelph University - their only student to have achieved this while working full time.

She and husband Sean have four children and a crazy Bernese Mountain Dog. True to their northern roots, she and her husband actually love winter...

Claim to fame: Cheryl's grandfather was THE Sargeant Pepper...'

Rotary News Today

February is Rotary Peace and Conflict Prevention/Resolution Month
Of the 60 million people displaced by armed conflict or persecution, 90% are civilians. Half of those civilians are children. That’s millions of reasons why Rotary is so engaged in service projects, fellowships and other Rotary-sponsored campaigns in pursuit of peace in our world.

We train adults and young leaders to prevent and mediate conflict. We aid refugees who have fled dangerous areas. Rotarians also address the underlying structural causes of conflict by relieving millions of people suffering from poverty, inequality, ethnic tensions, lack of access to education and unequal distribution of resources.

In yet another program to achieve worldwide peace, up to 100 Rotary Peace Fellows are selected to attend Rotary Peace Centers to participate in master's degree programs at one of the partner universities. Rotary Peace Fellows study subjects related to the root causes of conflict and explore innovative solutions that address real-world needs. There are more than 1,000 peace fellowship alumni are working in over 100 countries.

Invite others to join Rotary and help spread peace around the world.

The Burton Rotary Club is chairing for the 20th year the Avoidable Blindness Project in Empalme’, Sonora, Mexico.  They have a continued partnership with the Empalme’ Rotary Club where they travel with a group of volunteer Rotarians, family members, and friends along with optometry students to examine over 2,000 patients. Each patient will also receive sunglasses and reading glasses as well.

At our November Board meeting it was agreed we would forward US$500 for this project. Each patient will also receive sunglasses and reading glasses as well.

The Salvation Army
On behalf of The Salvation Army we would like to sincerely thank you for your amazing support of the 2019 Christmas Kettle Campaign. With the dedication and help from the Rotary Club of Downtown London, we were able to provide 4,431 food hampers to local families this past Christmas and 6,758 children received a bag of toys. The funds that are raised at the kettles help make a difference to the thousands of families and individuals in our community that look to us for help during Christmas and throughout the year. We are so excited to share with you that we exceeded our goal of $550,000, reaching a grand total of $637,338.30…a new record for London!!

We could not have done it without your help! Our calculations indicate that approximately $3,430.93 was raised at the kettle locations that were staffed by your volunteer group over the course of the kettle campaign. We are extremely thankful for all of your hard work and commitment to supporting The Salvation Army. Thank you once again for helping us help others!
