--The Jack Burghardt Community "Service Above Self" Award--
Nomination period extended  to April 12th
This prestigious award may be awarded annually in the spring of the year. The purpose of The Jack Burghardt Community "Service Above Self" Award is to recognize a member of the Rotary Club of London who is primarily involved as an active community volunteer in “non-Rotarian” activities, and secondarily as an active member within the Rotary Club of London. For much of the 1970s Jack Burghardt anchored CFPL-TV’s FYI News at 6 p.m. In 1981 he won the Federal by-election in London West. Following federal politics, Jack entered municipal politics winning a seat on the Board of Control in 1985. As he garnered the most votes, he attained the position of Deputy Mayor and was re-elected to both positions in 1988 and 1991. In 1974 Jack joined our Club and became one of our Sergeants-At-Arms, an extremely successful one!  Jack helped out with a variety of committees including the Easter Seals campaigns. Following Jack’s death in 2002 the name of this award was changed to The Jack Burghardt Community ‘Service Above Self’ Award.
All current active members of the Rotary Club of London, including Board members, are eligible to receive this award with the exception of the following members who are previous recipients: Bill Barnett, Jim Swan, Heather Broadhead, Bruce McGauley, Randy Warden, Felipe S. Gomes, Jan Delaney, John Eberhard, Jim Belton, Bob Earle, Ron Posno and Harry Joosten. Members of the Club are requested to complete the Nomination Form and forward to Club Secretary, Jim Belton, at  jimbelton@rogers.com  by Monday, April 12th.  The form is can be found the home page of our website under “Home Page Download Files”. The final decision rests with the Board.

ENVIRONMENTAL DAY IS APRIL 24TH
One of D.G. David's key District Conference activities this year is the D6330 Environment Day which is scheduled for Saturday April 24th. At that time Rotary Clubs throughout our District will be undertaking a variety of different Environment related activities. In honour of this day the Rotary Club of London and The Rotary Club of London Satellite are conducting a joint tree planting event from 9 AM to 1 PM. We are doing this with the direction, support, assistance and guidance of ReForest London. They will supply and deliver 150 native trees and shrubs ranging in size from 2 ft. to 6 ft. in height and chosen specifically for the site at which they will be planted. Two ReForest London staff will plan and run the event for us completing required logistics issues including site planning and coordination with City Staff, obtaining utility locates, site preparation, ordering mulch, etc. and two "Tree Specialist" volunteers to assist with event setup, tree planting and staking. All necessary equipment will be supplied and delivered to the site including protective tree wraps, shovels, pruners, gloves, rakes and wheelbarrows. ReForest London provided 3 different sites and the Board of the Club has selected the one designated as "Hyde Park Rotary Link" which is located on the south side of Gainsborough Road and west of Hyde Park Road in an area which is part of the Hyde Park Storm Water Pond and Canterbury Park. In order to sign up for this event and to comply with COVID-19 protocols for contact tracing of participants we need to provide full names, addresses, email and phone numbers.  Here is a link which you can click which will take you to a form that will collect this information. A form needs to be completed for each participant. If you are completing the form for others (e.g. spouse, teenage children, etc.) once you have completed your own form you will receive a confirmation email and on that email just below your confirmation will be another link that you can click to add another participant.
Again and depending on what Colour restriction level London is under at the time of the event we will be limited to the number of participants. Under Orange we will be allowed up to 45 participants and Under Red we will be restricted to 21 participants. So please sign up soon so you do not miss out on this activity. Once we have our participant list more details will be provided as we approach the day for Tree Planting.

Support for Majo’s Extended Stay / Post-Secondary Education in London, Canada
As most RCL members are aware, Maria Jose Camacaro Figueroa (“Majo”) was sponsored by our club as a Rotary Youth Exchange student for the 2019-2020 academic year (Grade 11 at HB Beal Secondary School).  Because of the Covid pandemic and also due to the political and economic circumstances in Venezuela, Majo could not go home last summer and, indeed, has no option to return there any time soon. If you would like to view a video message from Majo, click this DropBox link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/q2xl2h37vtcb5x4/2021%2003%2029%20Majo%20Camacaro.mov?dl=0
Five local couples have taken turns hosting Majo for this extra extended year and she has been enrolled for Grade 12 at Beal, graduating with a full Ontario high school diploma in June. She has been accepted into the Interior Design program at Fanshawe College with classes starting in September 2021. Majo has also submitted her application to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) to extend her study visa and for permission to work (part-time during school and full time during summers). We anticipate little trouble finding accommodation for Majo during her upcoming studies but would appreciate some help in funding her substantial tuition costs as she is required by Fanshawe to register as an international student.  (A short time ago, Majo’s parents had to flee Venezuela, leaving home and business, and cannot provide financial support.) How can you contribute? Our Rotary Club of London Foundation has an Education Fund.  The Foundation Board has authorized that amounts from this Fund can be used for post-secondary tuition through direct payments to Canadian colleges and universities, Fanshawe included.  Contributions to this Fund receive a Canadian charitable donation tax receipt.  To make a donation:
1)-Send a cheque payable to the “Rotary Club of London Foundation” (put “Education Fund” on the memo line of the cheque)
2)-Use your credit card at https://www.canadahelps.org/en/dn/60706 (a CanadaHelps webpage dedicated to our Foundation, enter “Education Fund” in the message field)
3)-Via Interac email to sronson55@gmail.com (no need to set up security question or answer, funds go direct to our club and are then forwarded to the Foundation, put “Education Fund” in the message field)
