Rotary News Today

May is Rotary Youth Service Month

Each year, Rotary connects thousands of young people to a global network of friendshipservice, and action. As Rotaractors and Interactors, they make a difference in communities at home and abroad. Through the Rotary Youth Exchange, they explore new cultures.  Through the Adventure in Citizenship Award and the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards, RYLA, (Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders in our District) participants learn skills that will help them succeed as community leaders. Each year over 500,000 young people participate in Rotary Youth Service programs worldwide.

Our Club is very involved in Youth Service. We are the sponsor for the Western University and Fanshawe College Rotaract clubs and co-sponsor of the London Interact Club. This year we sent 2 Youth Exchange students abroad and are hosting a student, Juan. We sent a student to the Adventures in Citizenship program in Ottawa and will be sending 7 students to our District’s Seminar for Tomorrow’s Leaders (RYLA).

Breakfast of Champions Award Recipient

This past Tuesday at the Breakfast of Champions, organized by St. Joseph’s Health Care Foundation and the Middlesex branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), the two Champion of Mental Health Awards were presented by CMHA Middlesex.  They recognize a group and an individual who make significant contributions to mental wellness in our community.

Mental health advocate Kristen Legault-Donkers, a psychology student at King’s University College, received the ‘individual’ award for the series of books she published on depression, anxiety, ADHD and bipolar disorder geared to children. Through a partnership with our Rotary Club the books will be distributed to 100 elementary schools in the Thames Valley District School Board. Congratulations Kristen!
