Rotary News Today

September is Rotary Basic Education and Literacy Month
Basic education and literacy is one of Rotary’s six areas of focus. In 1985 Rotary declared basic literacy to be a pre-condition to the development of peace.

Rotary’s goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

Sixty-seven million children worldwide have no access to education and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate.

Rotarians are encouraged to raise awareness of literacy issues and to organize literacy projects at home and abroad such as our shipping of school supplies to Haiti and South Africa and our dictionary and Start2Finish programs in London.

My Sisters' Place

OK RC/London, after this past Monday’s presentation by My Sisters Place, a few of you were wanting to know how to donate. Heather Broadhead will bring a box to our next meeting (11 September) and you can bring stuff to fill it. Here are a few things they need on an ongoing basis;

shampoo and conditioners - hair brushes and combs - toothbrushes - feminine hygiene and incontinence products - Tim's coffee cards($5) - women’s underwear - plastic bags(especially the ones used for grocery shopping) -  socks - winter mitts, scarves and gloves/hats - blankets and pens. Gently used clothing for those that come in off the street with none or very little. Birthday cards.  Thx Heather.
