Small Modular Reactors (SMR’s) A Compelling Solution for Carbon-Free Future Electrical Energy

Frans Koch obtained his B.A.Sc. in Engineering Physics from the University of Toronto and his M.Sc. in Computer Science from the University of Calgary.  He worked for the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) for 20 years and was posted to Northern Nigeria, Tanzania and Egypt.  Then he worked for 2 years for the Science and Technology Division of the Department of Foreign Affairs.

For the last 10 years of his career he was the secretary of two task forces of the International Energy Agency dealing with Electric Vehicles and with Hydropower and has authored over a half a dozen papers on Electric Vehicles, Renewable Energy, and Hydropower.

His presentation will outline the action that needs to be taken in different economic sectors to reduce the impact of climate change, and will then focus on electricity generation as the key to decarbonise our economy.  It will indicate the scale of the efforts required, and briefly review the technologies that are available to achieve this goal.  It will then focus on 4th Generation nuclear power, and describe developments in Canada and the contribution it can make to attaining carbon free electricity generation.
