Rotary Centennial Garden
In honour of our 100th anniversary on May 1, 2020, we worked with the City of Nanaimo to complete our Rotary Centennial Garden in the northeast corner of the city’s waterfront Maffeo Sutton Park.
Inspired by the intertidal shoreline, the circular garden is bordered by benches and pergolas that allow visitors to enjoy views of the seawall and Nanaimo Harbour. It includes a 100th anniversary plaque and a time capsule. Pathways and interpretive signs promote Rotarian values, including peace.

Working for several years with the City of Nanaimo, Nanaimo Parks and Recreation and the Nanaimo City Council, our club made a major contribution and completed design and engineering work for the garden. Construction commenced in April 2020 and was completed in summer 2020. It was officially inaugurated by the City of Nanaimo in September 2020.
Careful planning went into the garden, as we wanted it to be:
- Highly visible and accessible to all in the community
- A place of natural beauty for rest and contemplation
- Promoting peace, a major value of Rotarians
