Program notes November 30, 2018
Douglas Anderson introduced today’s speakers, our own members Lila Tanner and John Salem, who were asked to talk to us about the Rotary Foundation.   November is Rotary Foundation month.

Lila read out a list of ten events and people connected to Rotary who have affected our world.  To name a few:  President Franklin Roosevelt’s secretary of state who was the “father of the United Nations” as well as other key players in the creation of the UN had Rotary connections and in 1985 when Polio Plus was launched, Rotary began to further establish connections with the United Nations and also cemented its relationship with the World Health Organization.  Later the Bill Gates Foundation offered to match Rotary’s contributions.  She named a number of other efforts both small and large by individuals and clubs from South America, Europe and Canada.  She closed by saying “We have much to be proud of”.

John’s theme was “Lest we forget”.  He noted that Rotary was established in 1905 and therefore has seen 2 world wars and a countless number of world conflicts from the Korean War to the War on terrorism.   Rotary continued its good work through all of them.  Rotary has long been recognized for its world service, polio eradication, clean water incentives, schools and latrines, and the list goes on with new projects every day.  These projects are largely funded by generous donations through Rotary Foundation.  November is foundation month and November 11th marked the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War to end all wars… WWI.  As we move forward, new challenges will be accepted by Rotary because the world is evolving and becoming smaller every day.  He closed off with one thought:  “Lest we forget”.

Members are asked to consider the Foundation in their charitable giving all year but especially so in November.

Behzad Forghani Targhi thanked our two speakers and presented each of them with the coveted Rotary pen.

The rest of the meeting was dedicated to the Rotary Foundation.
