President Bob Janes welcomed members to our first 4:00 pm Friday afternoon social at the Nanaimo Golf Club. We hope that this will become a regular monthly fixture as a way of meeting up in person while still preserving social distancing and other guidelines. Click here to see photos from the social. Birthdays and Anniversaries We kicked off the meeting with a traditionally rowdy Rotary version of Happy Birthday for Norm Myden. Debbie Narver and Dave Connolly are celebrating their birthdays on July 21st and 26th respectively. Doug Wortley’s second Club anniversary is July 20th. New Member Induction Past president Janeane Coutu conducted a moving ceremony to welcome Leigh Blaney as the Club’s newest member. Janeane spoke of our proud hundred years history of service to the community and overseas, urged Leigh to get to know her fellow members and to become involved with the work of one or more of our committees. Denise Wittkofski is Leigh’s sponsor and presented her with her Rotary pin. Leigh’s classification is nursing. AnnouncementsAssistant District Governor Wayne Anderson presented the Club with an award from Rotary International recognizing our contribution to the Polio Plus fund. Last year Rotary International succeeded in collecting over $50 million USD for the polio campaign and so qualified for double matching funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, in effect raising $150 million USD. Wayne also congratulated Janeane for her personal decision to become a member of the Polio Plus Society by committing to contribute $100 USD per year for as long as it takes to eradicate polio. SocialFollowing Club business was the “Know your spouse” game. Three couples volunteered for the game: the Hammonds, Hankins and McFarlanes. First with the men absent, the ladies were asked to write down answers to such questions as: how much housework does he do; where did you go on your first date and how many dates before your first kiss? Upon their return the guys had to supply their answers to the same questions. It was amazing that after so many years together, less than half the answers agreed. Then roles were reversed and the ladies left while the guys wrote out their answers. Questions included the wives eye colour, favourite flower, favourite vacation spot and the craziest thing he did to impress her. The ladies seemed to know their husbands a little better than we saw in the first round as their answers coincided with their husbands roughly half the time. Dawn and John Hankins were the winners based on the most correct answers.
