Rotary Meeting
Meeting Notes
President Janeane opened the meeting, welcomed 28 members online and started us off with a fun survey. It seems that most of us were feeling a sunny disposition, not many had sourdough on the go at home, quite a few had planted a vegetable garden and some had already sampled home-grown strawberries.

Announcements

Janeane announced that our inbound exchange student Igor is finally all set to return home to Poland. He has a flight to Amsterdam and his parents are making arrangements for onward ground transportation since all flights to Poland are cancelled. It was Igor’s birthday with a celebration in the evening and a trip to Wild Play on Saturday.

Lynne announced that invoices for Club membership fees will be sent out this weekend.

Rotary Video

The video showed that Fellowship has a special meaning in Rotary: international groupings of Rotarians with shared interests. There are at least 80 fellowship groups and the video suggested that we can enhance our Rotary experience by joining a Fellowship that matches our interests. Many fellowships organize activities that do good for society. Click here to learn about Rotary Fellowships.

Presentation

Our newest member, Leslie Sundby, gave her “baby talk”. Leslie grew up in Oakville, Ontario and after finishing high school spent a year skiing and waitressing in Banff. She then spent three years at nursing school in Victoria and obtained her diploma in nursing. Later on she added bachelor and masters degrees in nursing. Leslie has a daughter who is also a nurse and a son who works in construction. Leslie’s passions outside her work include triathlon, skiing and kayaking among the Gulf Islands. She also enjoys a game of bridge with fellow member Wendy Pratt.

Leslie is currently chair of the nursing program at VIU, but her career in nursing includes front line nursing, administration and education. She has led vocational nursing field trips to Nepal and to Sunyani Ghana. She thinks Nepal is a very spiritual country and has visited many times to help establish health care initiatives. She spoke about designing and helping to roll out the first palliative care program which involved specialized training for nurses. It is now fully self-reliant.

Leslie said that because of COVID-19, VIU has had to radically modify next year’s nursing program. All theory courses will be online; labs will be organized in small, socially distanced groups with lots of cleaning; and clinical practice instruction will be decided later, depending on the status of COVID-19.

Janeane thanked Leslie for her talk and said we are glad to have her in the Club and are looking forward to her involvement.

Happy and Sad Bucks

Janeane was sad to announce the recent passing of Ron Blank, a longtime member of the Daybreak Club. He died peacefully in his sleep.

Janeane was happy that her daughter Emily had finished her last nursing exam with a positive indication that she had passed.

Dave Hammond was happy to report that the contractor was about to pour concrete for the Centennial project.

Joyce was happy to be back after treatment and we were all glad to have her return.

Peggy was happy that last year’s Rotary tee shirt fits better than ever! Also happy for her daughters 14th birthday.

Wendy was happy to introduce her good friend Annabel, the mother of her daughter-in-law.

Janeane then closed the meeting and wished everyone a happy weekend.
