MEETING NOTES, January 18, 2019

President Charles rang the bell and called the meeting to order at 12:35 and we all rose for the singing of the Canadian national anthem. The Inspiration was given by Lila Tanner.

 

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS - Brent Stetar

Derrick Rickwood, Rotarian, was visiting from the Rotary North club and our three exchange students, Dorien Abbekerk, Aiu Fujiwara, and Julia Motta Collazos attended.

 

HEALTH OF THE CLUB - No news is good news

 

PRESIDENT CHARLES: welcomed Henry Jiang back to Canada and the club after his visit to China.

 

CLUB RECOGNITION- 

There were no birthdays or anniversaries , Wahid Ali was congratulated on 15 years of membership.

 

CLUB BUSINESS- President Charles stated that the board had met this past  Tuesday and he had nothing new to report. He went on to say that 75 copies of a new roster had been ordered for the club. He congratulated Janeane and Bob Janes for getting the old roster updated in three day and off to the printer.

On January 26 the Mid Island Group will meet at VIU, bldg 250, room 308 to explore possible projects which might be undertaken with First Nations, all are welcome to attend.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS-

Laurie Bienert stated that the YPN is hosting an event, Thursday, January 24 and she extended an invitation to all rotarians to attend.

David Woodward on behalf of fellowship asked club members to complete the Fellowship survey requesting events that the committee could host. Survey has been emailed and there are printed copies on each table. The committee would like to do something each month.

Bob Janes commented about the birthday party planned for Bruce Ryan.

Brent Barootes had a plug for the upcoming Chinese dinner, the event is sold out and an extra table added. He said there would be door prizes and thanked Lila for looking after the decorations. Everyone was reminded not to lose their tickets because the ticket is the only way you are getting a free drink courtesy of the Coast Bastion.

Egon Holzwarth stated he needs a cashier for May, please let him know if you are available.

Janeane Coutu reminded us about book sorting, trainers are available to assist if required and sorting goes on every day. We have been receiving quality books and the donations continue to pour in.

 

SGT.AT ARMS: Wahid Ali

Wahid requested that unless you have the floor please respect the person who is speaking by not talking in the background, and that he wasn’t going to fine anyone today.

A phone was heard to ring and Lucy paid.

Bob Wilson explained that he still isn’t able to pick up books and would Wahid please look after.

Derrick Rickwood was attending to wish everyone Best Wishes, he also commented that he didn’t mind the nickname Rick.

Justin Bradley thanked the angels who stepped up to help finance the exchange students ski weekend.

Douglas Anderson was happy to see Henry back.

Joan Ryan said that she was happy to have Julia living with them now.

Dorien, Aiu, and Julia thanked the rotarians who helped make their ski weekend happen.

Laurie Beinert was happy to be at the meeting.

Peggy Richardson thanked all the members who reached out to Geoff and herself after both of their mothers passed away so close together.

President Charles stated that opinions are always welcome.

Wayne Anderson said it was nice to back after his knee surgery.

Laurie Beinert won the table stakes and Dave Hammond won a chance to draw the Ace of spades, unfortunately he drew the 3 hearts.
