JGR met in a Zoom Room for our meeting today!

Well, that was fun!  Today President Julie conducted the meeting from her dining room table and 34 members were able to get connected and watch Kevin and Kim's presentation about their trip to Project Amigo last month.  Just for fun I took some screen shots of members in the Zoom Room and pictures of members watching the program slides.  Kevin's dialog was amusing and interesting and Kim was able to fill in some other details.

So, my apologies for those I caught unaware in the screen shots!

Stay safe, stay well as we all continue to find ways to have fellowship and carry out our mission of service to our community and our world.

Zoom(ing) in on a Kiva lend

It was a Kiva lend with a Zoom meeting this morning! All from our homes, 9 of us met and made 9 $100 loans. We loaned in Bolivia, Nicaragua, Philippines, Tonga, El Salvador, Cambodia, Paraguay and India. We chose a welding shop, a tile maker, a furniture maker, 2 weavers, a sanitary latrine, a general store, a farmer and a pizzeria in Paraguay!

Very good progress toward our $100,000 goal.

Community Service Continues!

Gastineau Rotarians have been cooking meals at the Glory Hall since we chartered. When they contacted us to say that with current restrictions, we couldn't come in to do this community service, we found other ways! At the board meeting we voted to contribute $400 each month in lieu of purchasing food and cooking a meal.

When they put the word out to the community that they needed 4 microwave ovens, well, wow, we could do that. Contacting Home Depot to see what they had in stock and perhaps if we could get a discount, Home Depot DONATED the ovens! Thank you Home Depot! President Julie is pictured with Home Depot staff.  President Julie then delivered the ovens to the Salvation Army who is coordinating the effort of feeding the Glory Hall patrons off site with "to go" type meals.

We're all in this together and I just have to say, I love my Rotary Club and I love our community.

PUP - a Pop Up Project

Posted by Candy Behrends
President Elect Julie found us another PUP (pop up project) so we did what we could in 2 hours. Rotarians and friends did A LOT! Major weeding in the memory garden at the Bridge Senior Center.  We all need a Rotary Friend with a drill!  A critical aspect of the memory garden design are the three raised beds.  At 20 years old, they are failing.  However, while many hands make light work, with the right tools, it can be exceptionally effective too!  The beds will live to see another season or two.

Kiva Lending

This morning 7 Gastineau Rotarians gathered for coffee cake and lending.  We made 12 loans, concentrating this time in Central America.  We made loans to farmers producing chickens and hogs and raising coffee and feed.  We made loans to a welder, a furniture maker, several tailors and a small appliance repairman.

We have now loaned $85,150!  We have made 896 loans and are in the top 99% of Kiva lenders.  See "read more" to check out the graphics from Kiva!

Club's recent KIVA lend focused on supporting construction

Posted by Laury Scandling on Apr 10, 2019
The club’s decade-long KIVA lending portfolio exceeded $83,000 last week. KIVA is a micro-lending organization. Of the total loan value of $83,150, about $12,000 has been collected via loose change cups at meetings; the rest is comprised of paybacks, with interest.

Led by Candy Behrends, last Thursday’s “lend” was decided by Dixie Weiss, Sharon Barton, Doug Eckland, and Claudette Kreuzenstein. All but one of the seven loans – typically of $100 each – were made to individual entrepreneurs in construction.

To date, the club has made 849 loans in 72 countries. Just under half of the loans have been made to agricultural endeavors, another 20 percent to manufactures and construction, followed by food production. Fifty-five percent of the recipients have been women.

One-third of the loans have been made in South American and Central American countries with another ten percent concentrated in each Kenya and the Philippines. It is the club’s goal to loan $100,000 by 2020.
