We were honoured to host Dr. Tim Smith, Calgary’s first formally trained pediatric dentist, as our guest speaker. Since founding Dental Care for Children in 1972, Dr. Smith has dedicated his life to promoting the health and wellbeing of children. His presentation shed light on the hidden epidemic of early childhood tooth decay, the most common chronic infectious disease among young children. With powerful visuals and data, he exposed the serious consequences of untreated dental disease—including pain, malnutrition, and developmental delays—and highlighted disparities in access to care, particularly among Indigenous and immigrant populations. Dr. Smith made a compelling case for early intervention through education, nutrition, and fluoride use, calling for urgent recognition of childhood dental health as a public health priority.
