Chairperson:   Sue Ueffing

O Canada led by Sue

Sue welcomed everyone to the meeting including guests Breanna Hall, Judy Rafuse, Matthew Connolly and Brian Hermiston as well as visiting Rotarian Pete Smith.

Happy $$:

Sue is happy to contribute extra dollars for those Rotarians that are happy but do not have change to add to “Fred”. She is also happy to have a near “normal times” experience in Halifax with friends over the weekend, enjoying a couple meals out.

Shelley also enjoyed a weekend with her cousin and husband. They had a terrific visit.

John is happy Heather is recovering, with her cast off she is getting around better and building strength. Hoping to conquer stairs soon!

President’s Report:
Bill welcomed our guests. The strategy Committee received many surveys from the membership and are working through the responses as they plan next steps.

Secretary’s Report: nothing new to report

Illnesses: Dave Waterbury passed away on March 12, 2021 at the ripe age of 100 years. Dr. Peter Mullin passed away on February 23, 2021.

Guest Speaker: Breanna Hall
Breanna Hall, the Physician Community Navigator for the Annapolis Valley, and surrounding areas works in coalition with the Annapolis Valley Chamber of Commerce and Annapolis Valley Collaborative Committee.
Breanna lives in Centreville with her partner and two kids. Growing up in the Valley herself, she always knew it was the ideal place to live, work and raise a family. She is committed to showing the Medical Residents and Doctors how they can have it all in the Annapolis Valley too! As a NSCC Tourism Management graduate, her academic background is certainly an asset to the Navigator role.
Breanna works closely with the Dalhousie Family Medicine Residents and doctors within the Annapolis Valley, offering support to them and their families as well as assisting Nova Scotia Health with their recruitment efforts. This support may include finding housing, schools, extra- curricular activities, resources to aid lifestyle interests and building community relationships.
Her goal is to bridge the gap in physician retention and help flatten the curve! Breanna expresses we need to demonstrate to doctors that our community bond and friendships are lifelong supports.

Breanna is part of the Annapolis Valley Collaborative Committee working on the medical retention program. Partners invested in this initiative include the Rotary Clubs of Kentville and New Minas Sunrise, Municipality of Kings County, Town of Wolfville, Doctors NS, Valley Regional Hospital Foundation and the NS Dept of Communities, Culture and Heritage.

Over 53,000 Nova Scotians are on the Need a Family Practice Registry of which just over 10,000 are in Kings and Annapolis Counties. We need doctors! 10 Dalhousie Family Medicine Residents work alongside preceptors for a 2-year work term throughout King and Annapolis County. 40% placed in this area do not stay after the 2 years. By building relationships to support doctors and Dal family medicine residents we believe we can positively affect this and retain more doctors post-residency.

A few programs that have been initiated: Medical Residents welcome baskets, special events (ie. Spooktacular Ghost Walk), virtual retreats (because COVID prevents large gatherings and in-person events), and the Doctors NS virtual holiday event. To continue efforts, volunteers are needed to help with the welcome baskets, assist with site visits, co-hosting events, building connections and being available as an outreach resource. As well, money is needed to keep this initiative going.

Cate thanked Breanna for her presentation. It is a wonderful and much needed program in the area. She thanked her for sharing with us their progress to date

Committee Reports:

Valley Faces of Business (Phil): The 2021 theme will be a tribute to first responders. Planned distribution will be moved to around the Thanksgiving weekend. Sales are going well. Please finalize contracts in the next two weeks. If you are visiting a business or using their services, please approach them about being part of our book. Personal relationships help a lot in this instance.

Rotary Foundation Minute: (Phil) WHAT IS THE ROTARY FOUNDATION’S FUNDING CYCLE?
The Rotary Foundation has a unique funding cycle that utilizes contributions for programs three years after they are received. The three-year cycle gives districts time for program planning and participant selections, and allows The Rotary Foundation to invest the contributions. The earnings from those investments help pay for administration, program operations and fund development costs.
Your contribution in Rotary year 2020-21 will be invested in Rotary year 2021-22, and projects will be selected in Rotary year 2022-23, with the funds actually spent in Rotary year 2023-24.
Please support The Rotary Foundation now and get involved in planning future projects!
