Elva Heyge: 2020 recipient Heart of the District Award
Congratulations to Elva Heyge. Elva received the Heart of the District Award at our District 7820's Virtual Annual General Meeting held Friday May 29, 2020. It is awarded to a past District Governor who provided service to the District during their term as District Governor and who continues to contribute in an outstanding way to the work being carried out by the District 7820.

Because of the virtual meeting, it was not possible to get a formal photo of the presentation. This was a screen shot taken moments after the announcement was made. We look forward to "post COVID" when we can meet again in person to congratulate you. Until then, know that we, the Rotary Club of Kentville, are proud of you Elva. So well deserved!

President's report:

Phil also shared congratulations to Elva on behalf of the club.

He provided updates from the successful district AGM which included good news regarding the waiving of the June to January district dues for clubs. As well Kentville was recognized as the district’s leading contributor towards the Polio eradication project. Garth is leading a district team to accomplish the merger of three districts to two. District 7820 will include clubs from NB and become District 7815. The District conference in October will be a 5 hour virtual conference (Zoom meetings). The Kentville Club was also recognized for its work around the production of 10,000 masks (in partnership with the Valley Regional Hospital Foundation).

A reminder of the new committee structure and that the board is reaching out to chairs to review and update the recent Terms of Reference. If possible, please have these completed and returned to the Board by June 10th.

Pierre will be taking a personal leave from Rotary for the next 3-6 months. Club members will be (or have been) approached to help fill the gaps in the interim.

Finally, as we approach year end, we are taking a hard look at where we stand versus budgets. Committee Chairs are asked to contact Kelly (treasurer) regarding any outstanding or anticipated commitments between now and year end.

Illnesses:  Phyllis reported that Penny White’s sister, Elizabeth “Libby” Goucher passed away.

Guest Speaker – Wally Jarvis

In recognition of June Fellowship month, Wally (no stranger to our club!) introduced Rotary Fellowships, what they are, what they offer and how to create one or join one. He called upon four fellow Rotarians to speak about their Fellowship experiences.

Joop was first to speak about the Wine Appreciation Fellowship. They are an active group and meet during conventions, organize special trips and publish a regular newsletter (a copy of which was circulated to club members as interest). He mentioned Sue belongs to the Singing Fellowship.

Peter and Greg were next to speak about the Fellowship of Motorcycling Rotarians. There are worldwide chapters and claim to be one of the largest and most active. Both Greg and Peter participated in an Atlantic Canada Bike tour. Peter showed off the Fellowship pin.

Roger was next to speak about the Railroading fellowship and Rotary History fellowship, two of several Fellowships that he is an active participant.

As Wally demonstrated, Fellowships can enhance the Rotary experience. They as varied as peoples’ professions, hobbies, sports and interests. Most certainly worth members getting involved.

Greg thanked our speaker. Elva shared her experience in Hobart Tasmania as a member of the travel and hosting fellowship.   THANK YOU Wally and team for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us today!
