Susan:  Happy to have had a great trip to Ottawa to visit the grandkids, and with her son and his wife.

President Bill welcomed guests and members on Zoom. From the evening meeting last week, Bill explained that membership, especially participation and engagement continue to be important to the club. Bill also explained that Fred Falconer’s service is on April 9^th at 11am and Gerry has asked that everyone wear masks. Lastly, Jennie Barnard’s induction will be next week.

 

Illness Report:   Randy – Rick let the members know that he had enjoyed attending the sod turning at Orchard Valley United Church with Randy on Sunday. He was smiling the whole time!

 

Heather briefly introduced Will.

Will gave the club a brief overview of his life before he started his art career, including living both in Canada and in New Zealand with his family and working as a college teacher and then as an electrician. After he started making wooden sculptures, it developed into making wooden art as seen in his presentation below.

 

 

With his new studio up and running, Will will be open to the public as of June 1^st, Wednesday through Sunday, 1-5pm.

Heather asked how Will gets an image onto the wood, and he explained he starts with sketching and scanning it into photoshop so that he can play with the colorings – the sketching is his favorite part!

Brian thanked Will for his presentation!

 

Brian – Baking – next week on Tuesday at 5pm – they could use a few more people to help at NKEC.

Youth – Gerry – the youth committee were asked for financial help with NKEC safe grad, and they decided to give NKEC and Central Kings each $1000 to help with their safe grads.

Susan – Special events – 4 events upcoming!

All the events will be on Clubrunner.

Pierre – Environment Day at Oakdene Park is on June 4^th. It's a Club event, engage your families and friends to attend and we will need lots of members to help.  Details to follow!

Phil – Charter Night – committee chairs be thinking about the highlights of your year.

Valley Faces – the committee had a meeting on Friday to decide on some new and exciting things to add to the book. Please follow up on the businesses from your email.

Golf- 12 people showed interest so far so he will follow up on the best way to move forward.

 

 

Rotary Responds

The war in Ukraine is having devastating consequences on civilians as families flee their homes. According to the United Nations, more than 3.5 million people, most of them women and children, have sought refuge in neighboring countries and across Europe, while about 7 million more people have been displaced within Ukraine.

Rotary and Rotaract clubs in Europe and around the world have taken swift action and are working with members nearby to provide food, water, medical equipment, and shelter for refugees.  Some of the latest projects include:

Rotary District 2231 in Poland is using a $50,000 disaster response grant to provide transportation, accommodations, food, and medical assistance for refugees who crossed the border from Ukraine.

Rotary District 2240 in the Czech Republic is purchasing $50,000 worth of sleeping bags, medicine, food, and defibrillators, EKGs, and oxygen concentrators for victims.

District governors in Germany created a national task force to coordinate member initiatives and relief efforts on an online platform. A liaison office for government agencies and nongovernmental organizations has been established in Berlin.

Rotary clubs throughout France have mobilized to collect and distribute necessities to refugees.

District 1910 in Austria is using a $25,000 disaster response grant to provide accommodations, baby supplies, medicine, hygiene materials, psychological care, food, and appliances to Ukrainian refugees in Austria.
