You won't want to miss this historic event.
Membership Month
August is membership and club development month.

What makes you a proud member of Rotary? How do you live Rotary?

Many in our community (especially youth) are not even aware of what our organization is or does. The best way to change this is by our actions. Rotarians are people of action. We are a diverse group of people with one common bond: wanting to make a difference in the world. We are in the community when the community needs us, whether that is donating to the food bank and making masks for the pandemic, or helping young deserving students pursue their education with scholarships or helping build and clean local parks.

Let's be proud and visible. And have fun while we are doing it!

If you are not a Rotarian and want to be ... speak with one of us.

What Did You Miss August 24 2020
Kentville Rotary Zoom meeting

Chairperson:   Ellen Crowley

O Canada led by Sue

Ellen welcomed everyone to the meeting including our guests Shelagh Campbell-Palmer and Dale Sanford (Valley Hospice Foundation).

Happy $$

Sue is happy for her RV and the many great adventures including an overnight trip to Prospect Bay this past weekend.

Bill is happy for a new addition to the family. Healthy baby girl (couldn’t wait for Mom to get to the hospital) was born at home and delivered by her dad (Bill’s son). Bill’s second happy dollar is a thank you to Chris and Dorothy Maynard for offering their backyard pool to him and the grand kids!

Ellen is happy to report on this day in 79AD Mount Vesuvius erupted, and that several years (centuries) later she was able to hike it with a foggy picture to prove it!. Secondly, on this date in 2008 marked the opening of the Summer Olympics in Beijing China. Happy we are hear without explosions and fires and all those other things going on in the world.

Phil is happy to report he had a great vacation in PEI last week. He enjoyed the time with his four grandkids thanks to giant water guns, great food and wonderful beaches.

President's Report:

Bill reported he continues to work with the new committee teams and is making great progress. There were four committee meetings that he knows of last week. Please note: if you have an interest in joining any of our committees, there is room to participate. Please step up!

Zoom training should resume shortly, watch for more details. The aim is to have a number of Rotarians able to schedule and host ZOOM meetings.

ClubRunner has a great calendar feature. Committee chairs are encouraged to use it to post committee meeting dates. If you need help in using this feature (which is very easy), please contact Kelly Ells and she’ll happily walk you through it and ensure you have the access you need to post on the calendar.

Secretary’s Report: Nothing to report this week

Illnesses: Phyllis was in touch with Mary-Ann Morrison. Doug is settled into Grand View Manner and just celebrated his 85th birthday. She is sending a card on behalf of our club. She also reported that Ian got a new wheelchair to help with his recovery.

Guest Speakers: Shelagh Campbell-Palmer and Dale Sanford

Ellen introduced Shelagh, a pharmacist by education. She has worked in community pharmacy and with Annapolis Valley Health. She joined the Provinces pharmacy regulatory body. She is currently working as a private consultant providing pharmacy and health regulatory support. She joined the Valley Hospice Board in 2019 and is currently a member of the executive. She lives in Coldbrook with her husband. Welcome Shelagh

NOTE: Shelagh experienced technical difficulty with her audio and sharing her screen. Thank you to Dale for stepping in and recapping the highlights of Shelagh’s presentation.

Both Shelagh and Dale began by acknowledging the generous gift / support from Rotary. The facility is completed and ready for occupancy. Like everything else COVID has created its own sets of restrictions and delays. The opening of the Hospice has been delayed due to the pandemic and at this time no firm date has been set. Both staff and senior staff have been at the Hospice working all summer towards the operational aspects. It was hoped that a tour could be set up for Rotarians to visit the facility; however due COVID restrictions it is not possible. Please visit their website: ValleyHospice.ca and click on the “Virtual Tour” home page link to see inside. Below is a collage of pictures taken from the video (photo credits to Jamie Robertson and Royal LePage).

The building is inspired by a bird with wings. When you enter the facility, there is a huge common area that houses a kitchen, living room, large two-way fireplace and offices. From this area you move off to the patient areas.

Next week all staff will be on sight for orientation and training. With the uncertainty of the Pandemic no set date has been provided for when patients will be coming into the facility, but will likely be gradual when it does happen.

On September 27th, the Foundation is planning on their annual “Hike for Hospice” event. Visit their website for more information. Everyone is invited to come to the facility where the hike to Miners Marsh will happen. Monies raised will go towards property landscaping (beautification) and cleanup around the woods area. Each of the 10 bedrooms has a patio and view of the wooded area.

The Valley Hospice was built within the $4 million budget and as a result is debt free. It will be operated and staffed by Nova Scotia Health (not the community). The Valley Hospice Foundation will continue to raise funds to support other programs and projects outside the scope of NSH. Some examples of these may include Music Therapy, Bereavement support, beautification of the facilities to make it more home-like and other initiatives to enhance patient care.

Ellen thanked both Shelagh and Dale for their presentation today. We look forward to further updates as the facility opens.

Committee Reports:

Valley Faces of Business (Rick): Reminder the committee is meeting tomorrow (Tuesday) at 1pm at Rick’s place

International Services (Elva): Zoom meeting this Thursday at 11am.

Programs (Ellen): Committee met and set the program for September. Note: in place of our regularly scheduled meeting on Labour Day, we will have an in-person meet-up at Shelley Fleckenstein’s place in Wolfville on Wednesday evening September 9th. The first regular in-person meeting is planned for September 14th at Paddy’s. Please refer to Rick’s email of Friday August 21st to familiarize yourself with the COVID procedures in place for our safety.

Rotary Foundation (Phil): Do you know what EREY stands for in the Rotary world? You’d know if you read our Rotary Minute in the August 10 Bulletin. Sue knew: “Every Rotarian Every year!” This week our message is about Paul Harris Fellow.

WHAT IS A PAUL HARRIS FELLOW?
Established in 1957, Paul Harris Fellow recognition is given to individuals who contribute, or who have contributions made in their name, of $1,000 to the Annual Fund, PolioPlus, or an approved Foundation grant. Recognition consists of a certificate and pin.
Paul Harris Fellows can also be given on behalf of someone through Foundation Recognition points or through a combination of points and outright donations. Since the creation of the Paul Harris Fellow, over 1.6 million people have become Paul Harris Fellows, including notable figures such as U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, polio vaccine developer Jonas Salk.
Use the Club Recognition Summary to see your club’s Paul Harris Fellows.
Are you ready to become a Paul Harris Fellow and join your fellow Rotarians in financially supporting The Rotary Foundation?

Chase the Ace – With Gerry away this week, there was no Chase the Ace.

Our meeting ended with the 4 Way Test led by Bill.... Please join us on Monday for our monthly Business Zoom meeting!!! Hope to see you then.
